SATURDAY IN THE PARK.

Day 138 – Today was a go-nowhere day. It was in the 20’s when we got up, but sunny. We had our normal coffee/tea time in the morning. I had some catching up to do inside the RV and Rob continued working on the solar upgrade. More people had come into the campground overnight – one night stopovers; they’d all left by later this afternoon. We have the whole place to ourselves.

KERN NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE, DAY 1.

Day 137 – Brrr! 22 degrees this morning. But it was a bright, sunshiny day today, reaching 62 degrees in the afternoon with little wind. We are catching up on some things. Rob changed the oil in the Honda and started work on the new solar panels for the roof on the RV. When we reach more forested country in the Pacific northwest, the additional solar panels should be able to compensate for the loss of full sun access. That’s the plan, anyway. Before lunch, Rob took a couple of pictures at our campsite. There’s plenty of animal activity here.

TRAVEL DAY

From: Golden Shore RV Resort, Long Beach, CA.

To:John L. Whitehead, Jr. Campground at Colonel Allensworth State Historic Park, Earlimart, CA – Pixley National Wildlife Refuge & Kern National Wildlife Refuge.

Day 136 – Today was a long day on the road, but between the Los Angeles traffic and the sheer size of Los Angeles County, it took us a long time to get out of the sprawl and into less populated territory.

LOS ANGELES.

Day 135 – It rained some more last night and was cool & windy today. Originally we had reserved six nights here and would’ve been leaving today. We’d decided to stay one more night to allow us a little down time before moving on. We ran some errands in the morning and had lunch in the RV. We took the afternoon off and drove south for some bird watching at Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve. When we lived here, we used to go there often. We weren’t disappointed today.

TRAVEL DAY

From: Glen Helen Regional Park Campground, San Bernardino, CA.

To: Golden Shore RV Resort, Long Beach, CA.

Day 129 – When we got up this morning, the wind was howling around us and shaking the RV. Oh no, not again! We’ve learned now that these winds are commonplace when you are situated close to a mountain range pass; you are right at the location where wind is channeled through the mountains, and it’s the only place the wind can go. In this case the high gusting wind was just in this specific area. We only had to drive 10 minutes and we were out of it and completely safe. At first when waking up, we thought we’d have to stay all day to wait out the wind. We really needed to get to our destination soon so that we could pick up fish we’d ordered when restocking the RV. The fish was thawing.

MEXICAN FOOD & BABY PUPPIES.

Day 128 – After a restless night, we woke to cold weather, 36 degrees, but at least it wasn’t windy! It was weird to get up and see the place you slept in for the first time. It was a small campground, at least the part we were in which had full hook-ups. A larger section was empty – no hook-ups. Our side was not full and the people who were camping here were quiet. What was noisy was the traffic – we were surrounded by I-215, I-15, and a railroad yard. Otherwise, it was a good campground and certainly in the right location for what we were doing today.
