Day 45 – Ha! Yesterday we said that “we’ve been awfully lucky so far”. Our luck continued big-time today! Mississippi Sandhill Cranes and a tornado scare.

Day 44 – 6 a.m., still dark out, 66 degrees & humid. We’re up early in order to leave as early as possible. After getting the chores done and dumping we departed a little before 8:30, partly cloudy & 69 degrees. Leaving Georgia, going West thru part of the panhandle of Florida, and thru the lower part of Alabama to near Ocean Springs, Mississippi. This is just a two-night stopover on our way to longer stays in Louisiana.

Day 43 – 6:30 a.m., 65 degrees, humid & sunny. Week Seven starts with us needing to go get some groceries – exciting stuff. The closest town big enough to have a grocery store is ½ hour away. Rob took his bike ride and upon his return we decided to put off the grocery shopping a bit longer and headed out to the screened tent. The fog and clouds rolled in and the humidity increased. We hope it doesn’t rain because we’d like the tent to be dry when we pack it up for our trip to Mississippi tomorrow.

Day 42 – 7 a.m., 60 degrees, humid & foggy. After coffee, Rob went for a bike ride, same path as yesterday, two young eagles in the nest with mother and he took pictures. The girls aren’t very active since we got here, lots of napping and watching birds, then back to napping. I think that’s because it’s warmer here and they don’t have to run around to keep warm. We’re feeling the humidity, too.

Day 41 – 7 a.m., 63 degrees, sunny; it rained last night and hopefully that’ll lift the humidity a bit. We sat around for awhile with our coffee, then Rob went for a bike ride. He wanted to go out to the eagle’s nest to see if there was anything interesting going on. Also, thought he’d try the trail that runs the non-lake side of this Park. (Me? Friday, after we arrived I was walking the site and looking up at the trees and not at where I was going. I tripped on a hole in the ground and fell, twisting my knee. Not a bad fall at all, but those that know my history are aware of my knee problems and know a slight twist can mess it up for awhile. I’ve been laying low and not biking or getting in/out of the kayak, been doing ice and the anti-inflammatory thing & wishing Stephanie was here for some acupuncture. Hoping to be back up and taking advantage of this place soon!)

Day 40 – 6:30 a.m., 63 degrees, partly cloudy & humid. The bushes at the rear of the campsite are filled with birds and the cats are plastered to the window screens watching them flit about. Rob took a bike ride to the Park Headquarters and picked up a park map; it took him a while, this Park is huge. It borders Lake Seminole at the confluence of Lake Seminole and the Chattahoochee River. Lake Seminole then flows into the Apalachicola River down to the Gulf. We are at the Southwest corner of Georgia; Florida is south and west of us and Alabama is west and above Florida.

Day 39 – Got up at 6:30 a.m. and didn’t sit around with our coffee; got some driving ahead of us today, and we’ve found it’s better to get to our next campground a little before check-in time if possible on the off-chance they don’t assign your campsite to you but allow you to pick your own site. 53 degrees, sunny and humid. Day 38 – I think we could get used to this no internet, no phone, no TV way of life. Kinda keeps you automatically in the moment, and you certainly worry a lot less. Must be the swamp life hanging out in my brain still. We got up at 7:15 a.m., a little cooler today at 58 degrees, still humid, very cloudy. Packed up a few items and headed out to explore more of the Swamp, this time by car.

Day 37 – Up at 7:15 a.m., cloudy, 64 degrees and humid. Got the rental boat at the Ranger’s Station and headed out at 8:40. We thought because it was cloudy, the alligators wouldn’t be out. Wrong. We went out the same way we went yesterday for the Swamp Boat Tour, and saw alligators at the same places we’d seen them before. Creatures of habit. Once we passed the turn-around point from yesterday, we were in new territory. It was awesome. The sun came out about the time the waterway narrowed and because it was early, we were the only boat out on the water; the people fishing had been at the dock fishing from land. We saw so many different birds, turtles, and alligators that we lost count. We weren’t taking pictures this time. Rob was operating the motor and it took all his attention to make it thru the swamp between the cypress trees; I was directing him and pointing out obstacles in the water (including alligators and tree stumps).

Day 36 – 6:45 a.m., 52 degrees. Week Six begins with a Swamp Boat Tour this morning. First, Rob took a bike ride on the Fitness Trail and Upland Pine Trail and some Park roads. There are 3 Boat Tours per day; if the alligators aren’t awake yet this morning, we may take an afternoon Tour another day.
