After all the rapid progress toward the end of last year, this year seems a bit anti-climactic. There’s still a lot to do on the cottage just to get it to the point where we can paint the exterior, but each of those things doesn’t make a lot of visual difference. So, a picture of the cottage exterior today, doesn’t look much different than it did last year. One thing that does look nice is the new back porch ceiling.

We will be ready to start painting the exterior next week, and will have to look for a stretch of clear, dry days to get it done.
Continue readingHello all. Hope you had a good Winter.
We’re headed back to Maine to continue work on our cottage build.
We had a nice cold and snowy Winter at home in NY this year. Over the past few weeks it has been warming up significantly, with a few days in the 80’s and the trees are almost fully leafed out. In Downeast Maine, it is still very early Spring, cold and rainy. We took our usual leisurely trip from home to our land with two stops, one in Massachusetts and one in Southern Maine

In our last post we wrote about getting a preview of the coming winter. Since then, we have definitely lived it. A polar vortex descended on the Northeast, dropping the overnight lows into the single digits for three nights and keeping the daytime highs in the upper teens and lower 20’s. Our RV wasn’t made to be used in such cold temperatures and we had problems with frozen plumbing and a malfunctioning refrigerator. In spite of these challenges, we managed to get the siding finished, thanks to Downeast Cabin Builders working almost 7 days a week since Thanksgiving.

The house is almost fully sheathed and the garage roof is almost done!

Another 9 days gone and we are still making steady progress. Wall sheathing is starting to go up but we are still waiting on equipment to help us install the very heavy ridge beams and rafters.
