Day 43 – 6:30 a.m., 65 degrees, humid & sunny. Week Seven starts with us needing to go get some groceries – exciting stuff. The closest town big enough to have a grocery store is ½ hour away. Rob took his bike ride and upon his return we decided to put off the grocery shopping a bit longer and headed out to the screened tent. The fog and clouds rolled in and the humidity increased. We hope it doesn’t rain because we’d like the tent to be dry when we pack it up for our trip to Mississippi tomorrow.
Couldn’t put it off any longer and did the grocery shopping. The campground is quite large and spread out; when we drove out, it was amazing how few campers there were. It’s been very quiet here since the weekend crowd left. The grocery store was called Piggly Wiggly; it’s a southern chain and we’d never been to one. Nothing to write home about but they did carry the necessities and advertised pig necks for 75 cents. Ick. The only sandwiches in town were at Subway so we stopped there for our travel day sandwiches. It was surprising how much stuff they put on the subs compared to in NY. Had a relaxing drive back thru the farm land, the sun had come out and burnt off the fog.
Spent more time out in the screened tent, and Rob said good-bye to the little male Downy Woodpecker that he’d been photographing while it was building a home to house his future family. We wish we could stay long enough to see the courtship play out and take pictures of the youngsters.
High today 85 degrees and humid. Rob packed up the tent (which did remain dry), and we began getting things put away for our drive tomorrow. We liked Georgia, especially the Okefenokee Swamp. It left a lasting impression on both of us.
Seminole State Park, 7870 State Park Dr., Donalsonville, GA 39845, (229) 861-3137 “http://gastateparks.org/Seminole“. Large, well-maintained campground with plenty of room between sites. Many campsites are right on Lake Seminole. Motorboats are allowed with no maximum speed limit. The noise of boats was no problem off-season, but in the Summer it probably would be. Site #30 was perfect for us; all sites had electric and water, no sewer hook-up but there is a dumpsite. Good campground; we would camp here again.
so is the woodpecker building his nest in a dead part of the tree or was that “alive” wood? I see quite a few at home but so far I don’t know where they live 🙂 (not as much time to just sit & watch yet!)
The tree was alive.
