TRAVEL DAY
From: Glen Helen Regional Park Campground, San Bernardino, CA.
To: Golden Shore RV Resort, Long Beach, CA.
Day 129 – When we got up this morning, the wind was howling around us and shaking the RV. Oh no, not again! We’ve learned now that these winds are commonplace when you are situated close to a mountain range pass; you are right at the location where wind is channeled through the mountains, and it’s the only place the wind can go. In this case the high gusting wind was just in this specific area. We only had to drive 10 minutes and we were out of it and completely safe. At first when waking up, we thought we’d have to stay all day to wait out the wind. We really needed to get to our destination soon so that we could pick up fish we’d ordered when restocking the RV. The fish was thawing.

Our journey was only to be about 60 miles, but we had to be out of our current campground no later than 11:30 and could not check in at the next campground until after 2 p.m. We figured we’d just have to take our chances and arrive early, see if they’d let us in. If not, we’d have to sit in a parking lot somewhere in the RV and wait.
We departed at 11:20 a.m. It was quite windy at first but soon we were out of it. Traffic became increasingly heavier as we approached Los Angeles. There were many times we were just completely stopped in the traffic. As we approached the Ports of L.A. and Long Beach, we were sandwiched in between many commercial trucks. We felt small, even in the RV.

We arrived at Golden Shore RV Resort in Long Beach at 12:50 p.m. The temperature was 70 degrees with a light breeze and full sun. They were not pleased that we arrived earlier than check in, but allowed us to come in. This is the same place we stayed four years ago when last visiting Rob’s family. We’re lucky this one is here, even if it’s located right in the city. There are no other alternatives in this area. It’s a private campground, the kind where there are rows of RVs lined up fairly close to each other. But it is convenient and the only game in town. We were assigned site #52 with full hook-ups. Rob waited until Friday morning to get campground/campsite pictures and pictures of the surrounding area, below.

We partially set up camp and rushed out as soon as possible. We drove to Rob’s brothers’ house, encountering a crazy amount of traffic. We must save our fish! LOL. We got the boxes of fish and the boxes of cat food we’d ordered to be shipped to their house, and visited very briefly with the family. Ron, Sophie, and Maple, thanks so much for keeping our fish cold! We also stopped at the Honda dealership in Long Beach. Rob got motor oil & filter, and ordered a new Moon Roof glass, to be delivered to Honda tomorrow. A couple of days ago, we discovered the moon roof glass was broken. It must be replaced, but Rob can do it himself. Mr. Fix-It!
After the standard traffic issues we got back to the RV and managed to stuff the freezer with enough fish to restock us for four months. Now we’re afraid to open the freezer; it’s so full that everything will probably fall out. We discovered that all of our cat food (also restocking for 4 months), had not arrived yet; we’ll have more things to pick up during the time we’re here. The evening went well. The girls are fine here. We all went to bed early.
