LOS ANGELES.

Day 135 – It rained some more last night and was cool & windy today. Originally we had reserved six nights here and would’ve been leaving today. We’d decided to stay one more night to allow us a little down time before moving on. We ran some errands in the morning and had lunch in the RV. We took the afternoon off and drove south for some bird watching at Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve. When we lived here, we used to go there often. We weren’t disappointed today.

TRAVEL DAY

From: Glen Helen Regional Park Campground, San Bernardino, CA.

To: Golden Shore RV Resort, Long Beach, CA.

Day 129 – When we got up this morning, the wind was howling around us and shaking the RV. Oh no, not again! We’ve learned now that these winds are commonplace when you are situated close to a mountain range pass; you are right at the location where wind is channeled through the mountains, and it’s the only place the wind can go. In this case the high gusting wind was just in this specific area. We only had to drive 10 minutes and we were out of it and completely safe. At first when waking up, we thought we’d have to stay all day to wait out the wind. We really needed to get to our destination soon so that we could pick up fish we’d ordered when restocking the RV. The fish was thawing.

ON THE ROAD AGAIN!

Day 135 – We’d like to thank our friends & family for taking the time to visit with us during our two-week stay in the L.A. area. It was so good seeing all of you!  After much thought but no time to do research (therefore a quick decision), we’re going to head south and east next, rather than back up north along the coast. We miss the trees & definitely will go back to explore more of southern Oregon and northern California at another time. But because it’s winter & there are snowy and icy mountain passes to cross if we go north, then east, we’re going to try something new & completely different for us:  the desert of the southwest. We have no idea where we will stay tonight. We’re just taking the quickest way out of town & driving east to get out of the Big City; then when we (or the cats) have had enough driving, we’ll stop somewhere and camp.

Day 134 – Beginning of Week 20. This morning we did four loads of laundry & took care of some paperwork before leaving for Rob’s moms’ house.  We ran a few errands first: we found a small one-room, post office in an old area of San Pedro & mailed our NY school taxes, stopped for gas (amazing how the price of gas can vary so dramatically, as much as 60 cents per gallon, from one corner to the next!), and at a grocery store, picked up fresh red bell peppers & Yukon gold potatoes for a recipe we’re making tomorrow night. Didn’t get to his mom’s until about 2:30, but we stayed awhile and visited, Rob fixing a couple of things that had broken (this is why we call him “Mr. Fixit”).

Day 133 – This morning we made a huge batch of Guacamole, our contribution to this afternoon’s lunch at Rob’s brothers’ house. While smashing avocados, we watched 3 little boys playing outside our RV.  Their parents must’ve turned them loose to destroy the campground, because we watched them meticulously ripping the beautiful flowers & plants apart in the nicely landscaped island on one side of our RV, then stuffing the flowers and plant bits into their pockets, presumably to take them home to their mom?  How sweet, LOL.

Day 132 – Up and out at 10 a.m., the kitties said, “You’re not leaving AGAIN, are you?!”  Off to Rob’s moms’ for a long bout of cooking. Her kitchen is so much bigger than our tiny-house kitchen; five hours later we were packaging up numerous meals for freezing in single-serving bags for future use. And we were able to visit with his mom & today’s caregiver, Grace, at the same time.

Day 130 – Another busy day ahead, we spent all morning doing a complete inventory of the RV in preparation for doing extensive restocking for the second half of our trip. When we left NY in September, the RV & car were packed full with supplies for us & the cats. Four months later, we’ve just about run out of everything and have to restock and fill up the vehicles again. Since we’re pretty particular about the food we eat & what we feed the girls, there are many items we can’t find in every town we visit, so we must plan ahead. The freezer has already been filled with the fish we had shipped to Rob’s brothers’ house (thank you Ron & Sophie). After hours of planning & making lists, we were ready for tomorrow’s shopping binge.
