Below is a recap of Trip #3, our first trip all the way across the United States from east to west, and back home again. Our reason for this trip was to visit family & friends in California, and to stop & visit other friends & family along the way in the middle of the Country. Continue reading

HOME SWEET….SNOW?
Day 232 – Beginning of Week 34. It was 39 degrees this morning when we got up. If we used no more than 20 amps electricity at a time, we kept our electricity at this site without it browning out. Last night Rob called the campground owners & let them know that the 30 amp breaker wasn’t working. We departed the campground at 9:35 a.m., 45 degrees, partly cloudy.

CATS GETTING INTO TROUBLE.
Day 231 – Brrr….36 degrees this morning, cloudy. We did find another way to get home rather than taking I-80 east. Since we’d done that route in September, we wanted some new scenery to help with the monotony of the longer drives. An hour shorter & some of it new territory for us & also definitely more scenic, we took I-90 northeast near the Great Lakes for the remainder of Ohio, into Pennsylvania, then we got on I-86 near the New York border just beyond Erie, PA. Interstate 86 goes southeast through that portion of upstate NY which runs above the state of Pennsylvania. It’s called the Southern Tier Expressway. It goes thru Corning, Jamestown, and at Horseheads & Elmira, it becomes NY Route 17. (We’d been to Corning once several years ago when we went to the Corning Museum of Glass while checking out Ithaca, the Finger Lakes, and Cornell University.) Anyway, that stretch in NY, from Erie, PA to Route 17, was new to us. Although the leaves were not on the trees yet, it was a beautiful drive, running along several different rivers, through the Allegheny Hills & Forest, by farmlands, colorful small towns, and across Lake Chautauqua. Fall must be unbelievable here!

Day 230 – 38 degrees this morning, mostly sunny, windy. We decided not to go to the Amish market because we have a long day ahead of us & it’d be better to get an earlier start. Plus, judging by the Amish horse-drawn buggies going by already, it’s going to be very busy in town because it is Saturday. AND if we get there early enough, we hope (or should I say that I hope)
to stop at M Cellars Winery on the way to our campground. This is the winery we found almost a year ago when exploring northern Ohio near Lake Erie. We were taking pictures of Amish & Mennonite Barn Quilts & following the Covered Bridge Trail thru wine country when we stopped for a wine tasting at one of the many wineries in the area. Well, I need to restock my wine collection for future trips, and since we’re in the area……..

Day 229 – Ah, so much better now. We are all well-rested and Luna is not growling & hissing at Java & Pixie all the time. We DO like our routines & any interruption tends to make us a little irritable. Grin………..

Day 228 – Up at 6 a.m. again to get ready. They are supposed to complete the front end suspension work today, and we’ve asked them to look at the RV to see if there is some way they could do the back end also at another time. Depending on what time they finish today, we will either spend another night, complete with friendly greeting dog, or begin our journey back to NY.

Day 227 – We got up by alarm again, this time at 6 a.m. They said they’d be coming to get us at 7 a.m. After their breakfast, the poor kitties were closed back into the bedroom with the litter box, dry & moist food, and fresh water. Here we go again, they said. We feel so bad.

Day 226 – We got up to another warm day. Went to the Bakery and got two loaves of the freshly-baked Crunch Bread. They had just pulled out from the oven a piping-hot batch of melt-in-your-mouth Pecan Rolls. We HAD to get one of those. O M G !!! So yummy. Then we went to the General Store and got several more knives. (Last time we were here we bought a fantastic knife for chopping; it had been such a great knife that we knew we had to get others if we ever came back. AND they’re quite reasonably priced!) We also had time before campground check-out to drive to Iowa City to a health store to pick up some protein powder for Rob’s breakfast shakes. Back to the RV, we packed up and much to the cat’s surprise because they thought we were settling in at Amana, we departed for Oskaloosa.

HAPPY 40TH ANNIVERSARY, CAROL & TED!!! ENJOY THE CELEBRATION!!!
Day 225 – Beginning of Week 33. Mostly sunny and nicely warm this morning; wish we could stay here longer, but we have to be at Oskaloosa, Iowa Tuesday afternoon. The campground host was still not at his trailer, so while Rob was dumping tanks, getting more fresh water & throwing out the trash, I went over to the Park’s Office and paid for last night. They didn’t know he was gone, so we’re wondering who’s minding the shop now, LOL.

IT’S EARTH DAY! HOPE YOU TAKE THE TIME TO SMELL THE ROSES TODAY.
Day 224 – By noon, all of the people who were camping here had left (including the campground host who evidently had time off because no one was there when we went to pay for tonight). Later two trailers came in, but that was it. Very quiet and peaceful.
