THE RUGGED ROAD LESS TRAVELLED.

Day 46 – We got up at 7:30, sunny & breezy, 51 degrees. Today we’re going to finish our exploring of the southern coastal Oregon area. We left Idaho & arrived in eastern Oregon one month ago. We haven’t wanted to leave. It’s a beautiful State and we saw very little of it. We MUST come back. On our way out this morning we paid for 1 more night at Harris Beach; we will have been here 9 nights in the same campground when we leave tomorrow – that’s a record for us except for when we’ve camped on our land in Maine.

A MAGICAL FOREST.

Day 45 – We were up before 8 a.m., 51 degrees and sunny. The girls did indeed have plenty of energy last night, bouncing off the walls this morning, literally, as they jumped from their shelf above their carpeted wall. I also take back what I said yesterday – all the campers surrounding our site are leaving this morning. New neighbors will arrive today. We’ll probably be gone before the shuffle begins; got more exploring to do – we think today will be more inland along the Chetco River.

Day 44 – Rob was up at 7:15; me at 8:15 a.m.  It was sunny and 55 degrees. Another beautiful day. The campsite shuffle has calmed down around us because the people that’ve moved into the ocean-view sites got here a few days ago during the storms and have stayed. Campers still drive by to check out potential sites at the inner loops, but for the most part this area has avoided much of the changing of the guard. People are out-and-about more, certainly with the improved weather, windows & doors are open, and people ride by on bikes, take walks, and just generally make noise, but it’s a good place mostly. Definitely not private & quiet like our previous campground, Quosatana, but hey, you pay a price for the view.

BLUE SKIES.

Day 43 – Beginning of Week 7. We woke up before 8 a.m., the kitties pouncing on the bed telling us it was time to get up. 58 degrees, SUNNY, beautiful blue skies. We opened windows when it reached 60 degrees, anxious to de-fog the windows so the sun could get thru. Drank our coffee & headed out into the bright new world, kitties lying in the sun on the dashboard of the RV. First we went into town (Brookings) to get the grocery shopping done.

AND MORE STORMY WEATHER.

Day 41 – It rained HARD during the night; it continues this morning. This rain should put out all fires in the area, we hope. It’s very windy, the ocean crashes below us, the wind whistles thru the trees, the RV shakes from the wind gusts. So far not the huge campsite shuffle of the previous couple of days – everyone is hunkered down. NOT a day to be outside. This will put a damper on people’s weekend plans.

MORE STORMY WEATHER.

Day 40 – We got up around 7:30 a.m., still raining, 52 degrees. The campsite shuffle started early as people jockeyed around changing sites. The weekend is coming & the campground will surely be full. The wind died down some & it was just raining lightly later in the morning. The waves in the Ocean were very loud and much bigger than we’d seen them before. We decided to take a drive & headed south as the sun occasionally peaked thru the clouds. We paid for another 3 nights here on the way out. Once this weather improves we have lots we want to do in this area.

STORMY WEATHER.

Day 39 – We got up after 8 a.m. The kitties are now very happy here; there’s electricity & they have their heated pads to sleep on again. It was in the mid-fifties, raining & quite windy when we finally woke up. It had rained steadily all night. People had already starting leaving the Park; the great campsite shuffle began as some people already camping here in smaller non-view campsites moved quickly to the ocean-view sites as soon as they emptied.

Day 38 – Up at 7:30 a.m., 45 degrees, fairly cloudy out. We need to dump the tanks; looks like  we’ll be heading to a new campground today. After dumping, we left at 11:05 a.m., drove down the long & winding road to the Ocean, then headed south along the gorgeous coastline to Brookings, OR. We arrived at Harris Beach State Recreation Area Campground at 12:10 p.m.  It was 54 degrees & very foggy. Since it was supposedly so difficult to get an ocean-view campsite at Harris Beach, our plan was to just drive thru, check status, and move on to the other good campground, Alfred A. Loeb State Park, 8 miles inland on the Chetco River.
