MORE STORMY WEATHER.
Day 40 – We got up around 7:30 a.m., still raining, 52 degrees. The campsite shuffle started early as people jockeyed around changing sites. The weekend is coming & the campground will surely be full. The wind died down some & it was just raining lightly later in the morning. The waves in the Ocean were very loud and much bigger than we’d seen them before. We decided to take a drive & headed south as the sun occasionally peaked thru the clouds. We paid for another 3 nights here on the way out. Once this weather improves we have lots we want to do in this area.
Gorgeous out. The eye in the middle of the storm? 54 degrees and cold when the wind blew. We drove along the coast and crossed into California. Signs along the road before we entered CA read, “Last Chance to Get Your Weed”, etc. Strange to see, LOL. As we approached Crescent City, CA, the Tsunami Warning signs started up again. Hadn’t seen those signs since we were up in the Port Orford area. I remember hearing about a tsunami sweeping people out to sea in Crescent City, and also that they had a minor tsunami when that big one hit Japan.
Now it’s starting to rain again, the sun going behind the clouds. We entered redwood country inland. Even though it was dark & rainy the scenery was amazing as we drove by the huge trees right by the side of the road – I mean trees as wide as the highway itself. Seriously. We’re gonna spend most of the next month at least in the company of these big awesome trees! I bet we’re not going to want to leave to go anywhere else.
We took a beautiful winding road east of the Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park to check out a campground in the Smith River National Recreation Area. This is a wonderful area where the Smith River, full of rapids, winds along the highway through heavily forested hills. Fall colors had started to show up on the hills. The campground was lovely. We will definitely stay there in the future.
We also checked out other campgrounds in the redwoods and took notes. Some were good, some not so good. We didn’t take pictures of the redwoods, nor the gorgeous area along the Smith River because we knew we’d be back & the weather would be improved by that time.
Headed back to the RV and the wind & rain increased as we entered Oregon. The waves were crashing loudly. We got gas at a station in Brookings. Gas stations in Oregon are not self serve. Both attendants skipped happily over to serve us, laughing and smiling. We have found the secret to world peace after our time on the Oregon coast – legalize recreational use of pot. Hee hee. We had our completely legal beer & wine, played a board game called, “North to Alaska”, and then made dinner. The girls woke up for their dinner, played a few rounds of bat-the-toy, & back to their heated pads. Good night to all.
