Day 69 – We were both up around 8 a.m., looking forward to another sunny day. It was 36 degrees last night, but it warmed up fairly quickly today. We packed a lunch so we wouldn’t overeat again, and headed out to go into Fortuna to get a cell signal. We’ve done this so many times, the car can just drive itself there. The temperature in the house held steady overnight; we’ve got our fingers crossed it stays that way. Last night Rob did a few tests on the inverter. It’s working just as it should be. All is again good in our little world.

EMERGING FROM THE DARKNESS.

Day 68 – We got up by the alarm this morning, reminiscent of the days of needing to get up at a certain time with a blaring alarm. Ick,  6 a.m., dark out.  We needed to drive in to Fortuna early because of the time difference between here & NY; we had to receive a cell/internet signal to check the temperature in the house & contact the energy company to either cancel or confirm this afternoon’s appointment & unlock the door to let the technician in at home.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, BETH!  MAY THERE BE MANY HAPPY CLIMBING DAYS IN YOUR FUTURE!

Day 67 – Rained steadily thru the nite. 49 degrees at 8:30 a.m., light rain this morning. Later we’ll head back to Fortuna where we can get a cell signal. We’ll check to see if the inverter has arrived yet, and if it’s in, we will pick it up and also run some errands in the “big city”.

Day 66 – Rained all night, got up 6:30/7:30, 48 degrees, so far the electricity is working at this campground! As far as we know, there’s still no one else camping here. We have absolutely no phone signal & no internet signal. At some parks you can get a cell signal if you stand on one foot & hop up and down while waving the phone in a circular motion over your head, ha ha, but here there is nothing no matter where you try. This means any time we need to make a call, i.e., to check & see if the inverter has come in, or any time we want to check if the temperature is holding at home, we have to go to Fortuna, which takes about 20-25 minutes, one-way. Strangely though, we can get a weather forecast for the area on the weather radio. There is still a gale warning at sea, with up to 60 mph wind gusts expected where we are. We’re so glad we left yesterday and don’t have to drive the RV today.

Day 65 – 7:30 a.m., 54 degrees & sunny, BUT the furnace is out again at home. We need to stick around by the phone for awhile. At least we have electricity at the campground today. While waiting to get the call to let yet another serviceman into our house, we listened to the weather radio. The changeable weather; now we have a gale warning in effect thru tomorrow night, gusts up to 40 mph inland beginning tonight – looks like we’ll need to leave today because we can’t drive the RV in those conditions. We’d better head out today while the weather is good. While waiting on word from the house regarding the furnace, we packed up. Surprise girls, you get to travel again.

Day 63 – We woke up this morning at 7:30 a.m., 60 degrees & cloudy. No power (electricity) again in the RV. Rob wrote a note & hung it up by the campground fee station like he did last time. Rob did the daily check via the internet of our house – any break-ins, trees down, everything working properly – turned out the furnace wasn’t working & the thermostat was showing the temperature to be too low inside. The furnace had stopped working during the night. (At home, lately it’s been below freezing at night & we need to monitor the temperature inside to make sure the pipes don’t freeze.) We have a service contract with a company & we can lock & unlock the front door remotely, so we called them to see if we could get someone out on a Sunday. A repairman was sent out & we waited until he was closer to the house before unlocking the door so he could get in.

RECAP – End of Month 2, Trip #3

One month ago, we were camping near the Rogue River in OR. It was raining, what a surprise; things haven’t changed much in that respect. Now we’re camped in a beautiful redwood forest right by the Van Duzen River in CA. We travelled only 214 miles in the RV this month, lots more miles in the car. We stayed at only six different campgrounds. We’ve really enjoyed slowing down our pace, camping for longer periods of time at one spot & thoroughly visiting everything in each area that interested us. We’ve seen so much beautiful scenery along the southern coast & rivers in Oregon, and the coast, rivers, & redwoods of northern California. Just amazing. We’d like to return to visit the entire State of Oregon, & even though we’re not that far into California, we will have a hard time leaving the unbelievable redwood forests as we travel south next month.

Day 61 – We were up at 7:30 a.m.; 58 degrees, cloudy. The forecast had changed again, rain later in the day rather than all day; we can do some more sight-seeing. The power went out in the RV; the sign at the campground host site said they were closed, so we called the phone number for Humboldt County Parks & Recreation. It said they were closed due to the Veteran’s Day Holiday. Oh, it’s Veteran’s Day? We never know what day it is. Oh well. We left a note at the fee station, not knowing if anyone would see it, & left for a drive inland.
