Day 63 – We woke up this morning at 7:30 a.m., 60 degrees & cloudy. No power (electricity) again in the RV. Rob wrote a note & hung it up by the campground fee station like he did last time. Rob did the daily check via the internet of our house – any break-ins, trees down, everything working properly – turned out the furnace wasn’t working & the thermostat was showing the temperature to be too low inside. The furnace had stopped working during the night. (At home, lately it’s been below freezing at night & we need to monitor the temperature inside to make sure the pipes don’t freeze.) We have a service contract with a company & we can lock & unlock the front door remotely, so we called them to see if we could get someone out on a Sunday. A repairman was sent out & we waited until he was closer to the house before unlocking the door so he could get in.
We’d planned to go kayaking on Big Lagoon this morning before the forecasted rain started up again this afternoon. That’s not gonna happen now; we have to stay by the cell phone & wait until we can get this resolved; also to relock the front door when needed.
Things were finally back in order at the RV & at home by 12:30 p.m. It was windy, with dark clouds. We decided to go out to breakfast/lunch at the Seascape Restaurant by the pier in Trinidad. The restaurant had changed very little, 35 years after our other visit. Rob had a smoked salmon, scallion, & cream cheese omelette; I had shrimp, scallops, & chips. We shared a cup of clam chowder with garlic bread. Good! It was very windy out & we watched the fisherman on the pier. They were catching crab. Brrrr……
By the time we got back to the RV, it was raining hard. I looked on the internet to see if there happened to be anything about what they were searching for at the Arcata Marsh yesterday. I really figured it’d been a training exercise. But no, sadly, a 25 year old man from Canada went missing last night. He and some friends had been drinking & they went to sleep at that point we were at by the water. When they woke up today, his wallet, cell phone, & glasses were there but he was not. His mother was contacted & she said that he’d never leave his glasses behind because he couldn’t see a thing without them. The article I read also said that many young people liked to sleep outside & be homeless – it was currently the popular thing to do.
It was very windy out tonight & raining; the high was 60 degrees today, same as this morning. The electricity in the RV went out again, but as far as we can tell, it appears to be in the whole campground, too. The wind, I guess. End of Week 9, Trip #3.
