TRAVEL DAY

From: Salt Plains State Park, OK – Salt Plains National Wildlife Refuge.

To: Beaver Dunes State Park, OK.

Day 66 – We got up at 7:30 a.m. It was 31 degrees, sunny, with no wind, YAAA! Not in a big hurry, we hung around and departed after dumping tanks and doing trash at 10:45 a.m. By that time it was 44 degrees and sunny, and thank goodness, no wind. The White Pelicans were gathered at the base of the dam in all of their glory. Meanwhile, Java was happily posing on the heating pad before she found out we’d be traveling again.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, ANN N.! HOPE IT’S BEEN PURRFECT!

Day 65 – It was unseasonably warm today with a high of 80 degrees. The wind kept building and the gusts shook the RV. We huddled down with the cats. Most of the birds that we see here daily were gone, but the White Pelicans stayed. They, too, were huddled together seeking shelter near the shore. We did some much-needed catching up on some paperwork and cleaning around the inside of the RV. At around 5 p.m., the wind began to die down some and the temperature started dropping. Tomorrow we’ll be leaving for a one-night stopover in northwestern Oklahoma. Then we’re off to Texas.

SALT PLAINS NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE.

Day 63 – It was 29 degrees this morning, sunny and light wind. We set off for Salt Plains NWR before 10 a.m. We are staying at Salt Plains State Park and it was only 10 minutes to the NWR. Convenient! We knew it was going to be a good day, because as we turned onto the Refuge road leading to the Auto Tour, group after group of Sandhill Cranes flew noisily over our heads as they headed for the wheat fields to spend their day.

TRAVEL DAY

From: Foss State Park, OK – Washita National Wildlife Refuge.

To: Salt Plains State Park, OK – Salt Plains National Wildlife Refuge.

Day 62 – Change of plans at the last minute……we had known that today was going to be another very windy day, so even though we had finished our wildlife viewing at the NWR, and even though we’d already paid for tonight at Foss State Park with a plan to leave tomorrow……..we left today. Rob woke me up from a deep sleep this morning (when I really should have already been up anyway) to tell me that it was now forecasted to be windy again tomorrow, so we could either stay two more days at Foss, or get up and get moving quickly in order to leave ASAP and try to beat the increasing winds today. Surprise, girls, but we’re traveling again!

WINDY, WINDY, WINDY.

Day 60 – It actually rained a little last night and this morning! Maybe it was an exaggeration when people said it hadn’t rained in Oklahoma in years? The sky was dark and very cloudy; the wind had started but the gusts weren’t bad yet. We decided to take a drive around soon after getting up before the wind got too heavy, knowing once it did, we’d be at the campground in the RV.

TRAVEL DAY

From: Doris Campground, OK – Wichita Mountains National Wildlife Refuge.

To: Foss State Park, OK – Washita National Wildlife Refuge.

Day 59 – It was 40 degrees when we got up and cloudy, but NOT windy. We’re leaving today for another campground hoping to be settled in before the very windy weather arrives. We departed Wichita Mountains NWR, Doris Campground at 11:45 a.m., after dumping tanks. Rob had some help from Wild Turkeys, that weren’t so “wild”; they were meandering around the area. It was 64 degrees and cloudy.

FINAL DAY AT WICHITA MOUNTAINS NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE.

Day 58 – Rob was not feeling up to par today – to be expected – so we sat around and did a bunch of trip planning in between naps. The cats love when we are like this. Nothing is more fun than jumping on a map when it is fully unfolded in someone’s lap! And who doesn’t love to sit in front of the computer screen when you can keep someone from doing what they were doing. Walking on key boards? A total blast!

THINKING OF YOU, DONNA P.! HUGS.

Day 57 – After a ton of sleep I felt better today, a little tired and headachy. Now it’s Rob’s turn. His appointment at CVS in Lawton, OK was for 10:30 a.m. We still had the laundry in the back of the Honda. Yes, it’s finally laundry day. We passed the laundromat on the way to the CVS and it was not nearly as busy as on Sunday morning when we made our first attempt.
