ABOUT SALT PLAINS STATE PARK: We did not receive any informational brochures about this Park, just followed instructions when we got here, drove through and picked a campsite, and made reservations online. All the information we have is from when we drove around these several days we were here.
There were four different campgrounds within the State Park. When we arrived, there wasn’t anyone else camping here. Sandy Beach Campground wasn’t right for us, nor was the equestrian campground. But the River Road Campground and the very nice tent sites at the Spillway Campground were perfect. During our visit of 4 nights, only one other RV camped at the other end of River Road, one camper set up at the equestrian campground, one truck camper was at Sandy Beach, and two tent campers occupied the Spillway Campground. Obviously not busy at all off season!
We had campsite #20 at River Road. It was right on the water overlooking the dam on one side and the River flowing elsewhere. There were red rocks and trees across from us. Many different bird species spent the day right in front of us and by the dam. Fish jumped out of the water. It was gorgeous and quiet. We had water and electric hook-ups and paid $23.40 per night. Even though this campground was located within a State Park, the nice way it was situated and built made us wonder if it was an Army Corps of Engineers site. We found out it was. So nice.
We would’ve stayed much longer if we didn’t have so many other places to go. The Salt Plains National Wildlife Refuge entrance was about 10 minutes from River Road. There was a wildlife drive/auto tour. And Sandhill Cranes left in the mornings for neighboring farm fields, coming back at sunset to roost at the NWR.
The Park had dump stations, hook-ups at the RV campsites, shelters at many of the tent sites, playgrounds, restrooms, and two of the campgrounds were situated around the dam, and Sandy Beach had picnic areas, a boat launch, and access to the Great Salt Plains Lake. Not far from all of this, and still part of the NWR, you could drive to the actual Salt Plains.
