FINAL DAY AT WICHITA MOUNTAINS NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE.
Day 58 – Rob was not feeling up to par today – to be expected – so we sat around and did a bunch of trip planning in between naps. The cats love when we are like this. Nothing is more fun than jumping on a map when it is fully unfolded in someone’s lap! And who doesn’t love to sit in front of the computer screen when you can keep someone from doing what they were doing. Walking on key boards? A total blast!
The next several weeks planned out, and Rob feeling perky after lunch, we went out for a drive to see more of the Refuge, and hopefully more of the wildlife. Only the main highway through the Refuge was open. The other roads were again closed with the controlled hunting signs and we saw a bunch of pick-up trucks at a refuge building with a sign pointing them to the “Controlled Hunt Orientation”. Ugh.
We didn’t see much wildlife (I’d be hiding, too, if I was them) but we did see a bunch of very cute Prairie Dogs dropping simultaneously into their holes. As always the scenery and rocky hills were pretty. The main road did have a place without a closed sign where we stopped and walked around. Very interesting and very nice homestead. See below.
Back at the RV, it was nap time again. We had planned to be here thru Friday night, giving us plenty of time at the Refuge, but with these closures we were thinking about leaving early. In addition, when we had a signal in Lawton, we saw the wind would be picking up with high gusts again all day Friday. It is not wise to travel in an RV when it’s real windy. Therefore, we decided to leave tomorrow morning and be settled in at a different campground when the winds arrived. Sorry girls, tomorrow is another travel day!
