NEWFOUNDLAND – FOGO ISLAND TO NOTRE DAME PROVINCIAL PARK.

Day 90 – We got up by alarm at 6 a.m.  It was painful. Sleeping in is a wonderful privilege in life. We packed up and departed the campground at 7:40 a.m.  It was 57 degrees & sunny. It was only one mile to the town dump station & after dumping the RV tanks, we drove south, then west to the ferry terminal. We were plenty early & that insured us a place on the ferry. (The truck & large trailer that had been parked for several days two sites down from us got there too late to fit on the ferry; they would have to wait four hours for the next one. Bummer.)

68 miles, (4:35, incl. ferry ride and road work), 41166-41234

The ferry left right on time at 10 a.m. There was a bit of applause after the crew had fit so many vehicles on the ferry, just so. We sat outside for the trip to Farewell. It was really nice. It took less than 10 minutes to disembark and get back on the road. We said good-bye to the Islands & headed south towards the Trans-Canada Highway.

The trip was uneventful. There was a Fish, Fun, and Family Festival going on in Twillingate, so traffic heading north was fairly heavy. We encountered several long waits as road construction caused delays & cars were funneled thru into one lane.

We arrived at Notre Dame Provincial Park at 12:15 p.m. This campground is on a lake and is heavily forested. It’s also fairly near the TCH. It’s located approximately halfway between two larger cities, Gander & Grand Falls-Windsor. This makes it a popular weekend destination for campers. We visited the campground before going over to Fogo Island, drove through, and picked our favorite campsites. We made reservations in advance, so it was nice to know we had a good site for the weekend ahead.

We had lunch and set up camp. Our site was #7, no hook-ups, water spigots & a dump station were located in the campground. The campsite was fairly private, although there is a constant stream of vehicles traveling through the campground. You can also hear the constant drone of traffic on the TCH. Our site had a lovely view of the lake. The only problem with that is it overlooked the swimming area & during certain hours, screaming children outdid the traffic noise. Still, our neighbors were great, and we liked the campground & our site. We put up the screened tent & sat outside for the afternoon. Once we left the coast and drove inland, the temperatures rose 20 degrees and it was a little humid. The shade & the breeze kept it quite pleasant. The high today was 80 degrees & it remained sunny.
