NEWFOUNDLAND – LAST DAY AT FOGO.

Day 89 – It was 53 degrees again this morning, but it was foggy. Rob sat outside with his coffee. Too cold for me; I stayed under the covers. The sun was supposed to come out about noon but the fog was getting thicker all morning. We went ahead and went out to finish driving around the Island.

We drove the upper portion this morning, getting back to the RV for lunch after 1:00. The fog was just beginning to burn off. The towns of Barr’d Islands, Joe Batt’s Arm, and Tilting were our favorites. Tilting became a Provincial Registered Heritage District and a National Cultural Landscape District in 2003. Everything about this small town was interesting from the way it was laid out, the old fencing, the variously-colored old homes & outbuildings, the gardens, everything.

After lunch we sat outside. When the sun was out (not often) and the wind wasn’t blowing, it was pleasant. Otherwise, we had to bundle up against the breeze. There was less activity today as far as the Musical Campground game. Some campers left and only a few new ones came in to take their places. We baked up some Salmon in Bourbon Garlic Grilling Sauce we’d bought when we were last in Kentucky. The high today was 55 degrees and we had another beautiful sunset. Tomorrow we take the ferry back to Farewell, then go south to a new campground we’d previously scouted out & made reservations through the weekend.

Brimstone Head Lion’s Club Campground:  Stop at the Visitor’s Center when you get off the ferry & ask them where Brimstone Head is – they will give you a map and will circle where the campground is. (If not, ask for it!) We have no literature with the address; it is in the town of Fogo at Brimstone Head. It’s located about ½ hour from the ferry terminal. But contact info is: (709) 266-2540 or (709) 266-2402, and e-mail is mcoake@eastlink.ca.  Reservations are definitely recommended. We stumbled upon this campground by accident. None of the info we had, nor the AllStays app, had it listed. We had taken the ferry to the Island for the day, and a woman on the ferry mentioned there was a campground at Fogo on Brimstone Head. We checked it out & luckily, they did reserve campsites. We booked an excellent, waterfront site in advance. (It would be a shame to come over to the Island on the ferry just assuming you could get a site without a reservation. And we think that does happen; it gets crowded everytime a ferry arrives, like clockwork. Once all the campsites are taken, there is nowhere else to camp on the Island.)  If you can get it, the best site is #11. Most sites, including #11, offer electric (30 AMP) & water hook-ups. The sites behind the building without a water view are 15 AMP hook-ups. The campsites in the field are tent sites and offer no hook-ups. There are showers and restrooms. No dump station, but there are two on the Island; anyone can use them; one is on the way to & from the ferry terminal in the town of Fogo. There is no official check-in and check-out time because most people here are running on “ferry time” and may need to arrive or leave before or after standard time rules. That is nice. I cannot imagine how they’d run this Park with those rules. Although there is relatively no privacy here, we really enjoyed our stay and would definitely camp here again, particularly on site #11. Sites with 30 AMP & water hook-ups are $30 per night (Canadian) CASH ONLY.  Note: Fogo Island deserves more that a one night stay. Exploration shows you what life on a remote island is like. It is more than a camp-drive thru-depart visit.
