Day 50 – At 7 a.m. it was 61 degrees, cloudy, & very humid. Today was a day we’d been looking forward to – a trip to Savannah National Wildlife Refuge. When we camped at Skidaway Island State Park in 2017, we took a tour of Old Savannah. After the city driving we were looking for some relaxation, so we stopped at Savannah NWR, drove fairly quickly (for our standards) through the Laurel Hill Wildlife Drive. We saw then our first Tri-Color Herons, Anhingas, and lots of Alligators. We vowed to come back again & spend a whole afternoon, if not a whole day. It was one thing, in addition to the Georgia portion of the Great Okefenokee Swamp, that we were planning on doing before we had to go home because of my knee. Well, today is the Savannah NWR day.

Day 49 – At 6:40 this morning it was 58 degrees & cloudy; by 8 a.m. it was raining lightly. We have to move on today. Our reservations are up. We are making a short drive to an independent campground near Savannah, GA, close to the SC/GA border.

Day 48 – It was very foggy & humid at 7:30 this morning, 56 degrees. By 9 a.m. the fog had burned off and it was a beautiful, sunny, breezy day. We wanted a little down time & did not rush out this morning. We went out at lunch time to a farmer’s market that’s known for its’ Key Lime Pies, available Thurs.-Sun. Oink oink.

Day 47 – My knee, which had been like a roller coaster of pain (a few days of a little pain followed by the not-so-good days where walking was quite painful) has been less painful for a stretch of days now, basically since we left home. I am continuing with icing it & taking anti-inflammatories, and I do my PT exercises daily. But I was doing that at home. Therefore, I contribute the lesser-painful days to sitting on my behind for hours at a time. The drive south was many hours seated while we were driving. Since we got here, we’ve gone exploring by vehicle, again seated for decent periods of time. When I have needed to walk, it’s been with a cane. Rob’s back & shoulder issues which started in November from overdoing it at our land in Maine, are also doing better since his level of heavy activity has dropped, and he does a long series of PT exercises every morning without fail. Hopefully, we’ve learned our lessons: the old gray mare, she ain’t what she used to be, LOL.

Day 46 – Another good day! We were both up by 7:30 this morning; it was cloudy & 46 degrees. The weather forecast had been for several days of rain in a row. That had changed this morning & we were looking at another day of exploring.

Day 45 – Bright sun, no clouds, 44 degrees, gorgeous out at 7 a.m. this morning. We were taking advantage of the clear day to start exploring the area. We packed our lunches and headed out, turning south out of the Live Oak Campground and going to the separate part of Edisto Beach State Park that houses the Beach Campground & offers Ocean access. This campground is smaller and more popular than Live Oak where we are camping due to its proximity to the Ocean. We drove through and looked at campsites when we were here before; we wanted to see how it looked now. Still crowded and still very little privacy or trees. We only saw one campsite that we even remotely liked.

Day 44 – At 7 a.m. it was cloudy & 61 degrees. I don’t think we’ve had temperatures this warm since last Summer in Maine. Bodes well for the rest of this trip. The crowded campground was busy again, this time with people packing up. By 11 a.m. at least half of the campers had left & Rob went to the Ranger’s Station to see if we could move on over to our weekday site, #122.

Day 43 – It rained all night & was raining heavily & 39 degrees at 7:15 a.m. A nasty day for a long drive but at least it wasn’t snow & ice. Our destination today was Edisto Beach State Park at Edisto Island, South Carolina. Last night we camped in northern North Carolina, just across the Virgina border. Today we traveled through NC and south thru much of SC. Edisto Beach State Park was where we were staying when we had to leave. We’d only been there a few days & had been unable to do anything because of my knee. We loved it here, but hadn’t been able to explore yet. Now we will.

Day 37 – Boy, what a storm! High winds & lots of rain last night. With the Palmettos swaying against the RV, it was noisy. 61 degrees this morning at 9 a.m., windy & rain. We slept in. Right now at 3:30 p.m. it is sunny and breezy, gorgeous out. We actually have all the windows and the door open – mid-60’s.

Day 36 – I had another night of the aching knee, and I couldn’t get comfortable. This morning I could barely walk. Rob went off to the Dermatologist in Charleston by himself; we were concerned about how I’d even get down the steps of the RV to get to the car. At 7:40 a.m. it was 56 degrees & cloudy. It’s supposed to rain today & the temperature should only go up.
