NEWFOUNDLAND – ANOTHER RAINY DAY.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, KAREN OKIMOTO!

Day 154 – It rained all day. The temperature this morning was 52 degrees; it never got over 55 degrees during the day. We’re getting tired of this weather, but at least the continual rain keeps it cool. We were saying this afternoon that we don’t think we’ve ever been anywhere that got this much rain. People have been telling us since we got here that September was so beautiful, fall colors & all, and September really had the best weather. Well, I guess not this year. But tomorrow is another day & maybe then we can get some pictures of this area.

NEWFOUNDLAND – THE DARK TICKLE.

Day 123 – It was partly cloudy this morning with very little wind for a change & 58 degrees. We drove Route 436 today. Most of the small towns we’d seen last May, but they sure looked different without all the snow. It was a nice day and the scenery was lovely. Today was the end of Month #4, Trip 6. Our fourth month’s recap is at the end of today’s blog.

NEWFOUNDLAND – NOTRE DAME PROVINCIAL PARK TO LEADING TICKLES.

Day 92 – Today was the end of Month #3, Trip 6. Our third month’s recap is at the end of today’s blog. Today was 65 degrees this morning at 7 a.m., sunny and it was warming up quickly. We left for a drive; the campground was crowded and we knew it’d be hot & noisy in no time. We headed west and north for a long drive to a town called Leading Tickles, hoping it would be cooler closer to the Notre Dame Bay.

Trip #5 Second Recap

This trip unexpectedly was interrupted less than six weeks into our trip south for the winter.  We initially left home in New York on December 19, 2018. It was 18 degrees, clear & cold that morning. We returned home earlier than planned, arriving home on January 27, 2019. I had an issue with my left knee which caused us to go home early, not knowing at that time whether we’d be able to continue this trip. We had gotten as far as Edisto Island, South Carolina before turning around and coming home. The first part of the journey lasted one month, one week, and two days.

Trip #5 Recap

This is just a quick recap of the entire trip. We just did a recap of month 1, so we’ll adjust those figures to include the additional time we spent traveling since then.

We departed home in New York on December 19, 2018. It was 18 degrees, clear & cold that morning. We returned home earlier than planned, arriving home on January 27, 2019. There was plenty of snow on the ground with some ice on the roads and our driveway.  It was 22 degrees that night & clear, with more snow expected in two days followed by record-low temperatures. We got as far as Edisto Island, South Carolina before turning around and coming home. The entire journey lasted one month, one week, and two days.

We traveled 1,983 miles in the RV during Trip #5. We stayed at 10 campgrounds in 5 states: two in Maryland, one in Virginia, four in North Carolina, two in South Carolina, and one in New Jersey.  Highlights of this trip, not in any particular order, have been: birding on the causeway walk in SC & birding at Kiptopeke State Park in VA; kayaking at Indiantown Creek in NC; biking in NC at the Dismal Swamp Canal hiking & biking trail and throughout Huntington Beach State Park in SC; the Civil War Museum in NC and the Harriet Tubman Museum in MD; Brookgreen Gardens in SC; visiting with Gail & Keely & Shane in MD, and the Christmas-decorated enchanted forest, also in MD; the horses and the drives around Assateague & Chincoteague Islands & the marsh boardwalk at Assateague (MD & VA); Blackwater, Dismal Swamp, & Back Bay National Wildlife Refuges; and watching the ships & the sunsets at the Chesapeake Bay in VA. Although we were unable to explore all that nature has to offer at Edisto Beach State Park in South Carolina and the surrounding area, the time spent camping right by the tidal salt marsh was definitely memorable. We will return to most of these places again, and look forward to visiting more southern States as soon as possible.

RECAP – End of Month 1, Trip #5

We departed home in New York on December 19, 2018. It was 18 degrees, clear & cold that morning. Now, one month later in South Carolina, it is 58 degrees & cloudy this morning. We’ve left 2018 behind & begun 2019 with the longest government shutdown in U.S. history, currently with no end in sight. We’ve traveled from NY, through NJ, PA, DE, MD, VA, NC, & SC.  And we’ve traveled 962 miles in the RV during this first month.
