THANKS TO THE BROCHURES…..
Day 254 – …….we found some great things to do and made reservations – things we wouldn’t have known about otherwise since we are having internet problems. There is a boat that departs from Port Alberni three days a week and travels south and west to the Pacific Ocean & back again to Port Alberni. It is an all-day trip. We will be doing that tomorrow. We also booked an afternoon whale watch trip for Friday. We’ll be looking for Orca (Killer) Whales.

TRAVEL DAY
From: Cowichan River Provincial Park, Stoltz Pool Campground, British Columbia.
To: Little Qualicum Falls Campground, Lower Campground, British Columbia.
Day 252 – We were up early this morning, therefore we could take our time packing up. We departed Cowichan River Provincial Park at 10:20 a.m. It was 60 degrees and partly sunny. Because there were no hook-ups and no dump station, we had to drive west to Lake Cowichan to dump tanks and get fresh drinking water for the next campground, which also had no hook-ups. This extra step added an hour to our travel time.
HAPPY FATHER’S DAY TO ALL THE DADS WE KNOW. (And that includes a sloppy kiss from LUCA to MARK & MARK!)
Day 251 – It was supposed to rain all day today. It was warm and humid out when we got up at 5:30 a.m. We had to be at the Lake Cowichan library parking lot before 7 a.m. in order to have an internet signal when the reservations system opened up. We were successful in getting a campsite at our chosen campground for three nights beginning August 19. We’ll need to repeat this process several more times in the near future to secure sites to get us through August in British Columbia.

Day 250 – Like many days lately, there was some rain last night; it was cloudy in the morning, and then there was some sun. We hung around in the morning and headed out after lunch in the RV.

Day 249 – It was partly sunny this morning. Supposed to rain later, so we were on the road before 9 a.m. When driving out of the campground this morning, we saw that many campsites had cleared out. Although the campground was supposed to be full this weekend, we think the weather is stopping people from sticking around.

Day 248 – It rained all last night and a little while this morning. It didn’t clear up all day but did stop raining long enough for us to drive into the city of Duncan and take a walk on the Totem Pole Walking Tour. We had a map of the tour and drove to the old town section of Duncan, found a parking place, and began our tour. We made it all morning with just sprinkles of rain, then when we got back to the RV at around noon, it started pouring. The heavy rain continued all day.

Day 247 – Mid-40’s this morning and get this, sunny skies! We were up early and headed for the Mill Bay to Brentwood ferry terminal at 8:05 a.m. We parked in the line when we arrived 45 minutes later. About three cars ahead of us, there was a sign that said, if you’re parked behind this sign, you may not make it onto the next ferry – it holds approximately 19 cars. The ferry departed on time at 9:15 a.m. We were the last car to fit on it. The scenic ride took 25 minutes.

Day 246 – It was in the middle 40’s last night, but it didn’t rain. This campground is located in the Cowichan Valley. The Cowichan River runs through the valley; mountains surround us. It’s very pretty. Grapes grow here among other things. There are wineries. I don’t think we’ve ever had wine from Vancouver Island. We should try it.

From: Juan de Fuca Provincial Park, China Beach Campground, British Columbia.
To: Cowichan River Provincial Park, Stoltz Pool Campground, British Columbia.
Day 245 – Today we’re packing up and going to a new campground for a week. At least half of the drive consists of traveling back the way we came a week ago. Sections of this road are still rough, but we tried the other route several days ago, and that highway would be dangerous if we encountered logging trucks. Therefore, even though we’ve seen this scenery before and the trip will be longer than the other route would’ve been, we’ll be heading south and east back towards Victoria. Once we get closer to Victoria and head north, soon we’ll be in new territory again as we drive on the Trans Canada Highway (Route 1) closer to the east coast of Vancouver Island.
THE SEARCH FOR BIG TREES & LARGE ANIMALS.
Day 242 – It was supposed to continue raining today but again the forecast was incorrect. With the sun out and not too many clouds, we left a little before 11 a.m. to go see some more huge trees. We hoped to see Bears or Elk, also. We headed north towards Port Renfrew.
