TRAVEL DAY

From: Harbour Light Campground, Braeshore (near Pictou), NS.

To:North Sydney/Cabot Trail KOA Campground, New Harris, NS.

Day 26 – After a one-week stay at Harbour Light, we are traveling today to a different campground in Nova Scotia for a one-night stay. We enjoyed Harbour Light, and the next campground is also one we’ve been to before, a KOA campground with a great view over Bras d’Or Lake and the bridge that crosses over the lake. We will be about 20 minutes from the ferry terminal and the ferry that will take us to Newfoundland tomorrow. We weren’t the only ones leaving today. All the campers that arrived during our week-long stay are leaving today.

It was 39 degrees this morning when we got up. The rain had stopped and it was cloudy. After a leisurely morning drinking our coffee/tea and enjoying the quiet, we packed up & departed at 10 a.m. It looked like it was going to be a nice day here, 56 degrees & rising; partly cloudy & breezy. The flowers in the field by the campground road were pretty. As we were leaving, a large immature Bald Eagle flew over the road.

The traffic was light, but we did get held up briefly for road work. It wouldn’t be the first road work stop we would have. It’s amusing because the roads are in what we would consider – pretty good condition – compared to U.S. roads in general. Yet the Canadians are out in force repairing a pot hole here and a crack there. Nice! We encountered more extensive road work that slowed us down some, including detours off the Trans Canada Highway to another road or two, then back to the major Highway. We continued heading east until we crossed Canso Bay on the causeway, then we traveled north. At the cause-way there were delays due to road work, but since traffic was light, it wasn’t bad. The scenery was mostly rolling hills with some streams meandering along by the highway.

We stopped for the lunch break at a turn-out by the road. The girls were quite anxious to get let out of the bedroom. It’s always fun to see them come racing out, happy little faces: “Are we there yet?” and “Where’s the food?” I couldn’t resist taking a short video (although we’ve shown a similar one previously).

After eating lunch and tucking the kitties back into the bedroom, we continued on our journey. We stopped for gas in the RV. This last section of the drive was more scenic than the first part as we approached the Cabot Trail/Cape Breton Island and large Bras d’Or Lake. We have never traveled north on the Cabot Trail to Cape Breton National Park; it is supposedly incredibly beautiful and many tourists go there. We plan to see this section of northern Nova Scotia in late September/early October after we leave Newfoundland.

We arrived at the North Sydney/Cabot Trail KOA Campground at 2:10 p.m. Today was their opening day for the season and they weren’t busy yet. We were taken to the same campsite we had in 2019, site #5/6, a pull-through with full hook-ups and a great view of the bridge that crosses the Lake. It was 61 degrees, mostly cloudy & breezy. The high temperature today was 62 degrees.
