TRAVEL DAY: LAUREL, DELAWARE TO DENTON, MARYLAND.
Day 14 – We were surprised by some rain last night. This morning it was 52 degrees and cloudy. Our destination today was Martinak State Park in Denton, MD. We didn’t have too far to travel. We departed Trap Pond State Park, along with most of the other campers going home from their weekend camping adventures, and waited in line to dump tanks. It was 11:55 a.m. when we left the park, 60 degrees and cloudy.
The reason we moved to Martinak was because it was the closest State Park to my stepmother, Gail. Martinak was fully booked over the weekend and we couldn’t get a campsite. We were fortunate to be able to stay at Trap Pond and kayak through the Bald Cypress swamp. Now that the weekend was over, availabilities opened up at Martinak, which brought us about an hour closer to Gail.
We arrived at Martinak State Park at 12:55 p.m. The drive took longer than expected due to a traffic jam and heavy traffic on Route 13. We hadn’t had lunch yet, so after filling the tank with fresh water and parking in our campsite, the first thing we did was chow down. Not just us, the girls were hungry, too.
Then we set up camp, unpacked, and settled in for a four-night stay. Most of the campsites were empty. Most of the campers had already left. We noticed a low “roar” overhead and saw lots of blackbirds or grackles circling above the tree tops. The noise continued and Rob went out with the camera. There were thousands of birds but there were too many trees and the birds were circling too high. He got the phone and recorded the sound, link below. We hope you can hear this enough to get even a little bit of an idea of how loud it was. This is one of the reasons we are making a side trip to four National Wildlife Refuges in this area (Maryland eastern shore and Delaware). Migration time.
We were happy with our campsite and glad we had the opportunity to check out the campground in advance to pick the best site for us. Site #A34, no hook-ups, backed into the trees more than most of the sites, and private.
After getting set up, we left for Easton, MD to visit Gail and meet her cat, Lacy. We hadn’t been to Easton since before COVID and Gail got Lacy about a year ago. The drive took about 35 minutes. When we got there, we got to visit for awhile and it was wonderful. Lacy is the perfect cat for Gail and keeps her company. She is very pretty and very loving with a great personality. We loved her. Leaving Lacy there, we went out to dinner at a very good restaurant in Easton, Genesis Restaurante. The food was very good and the service was excellent. Rob had Shrimp Nachos, I had Shrimp Enchiladas, and Gail had a Chicken Burrito that was almost the size of a dinner plate. We returned to her house and played with Lacy who really is quite a happy cat. We had a good time and will see them again tomorrow. The high today was 70 degrees.
