TRUSSUM POND.

Day 13 – The children running around and the yipping dogs began before 8 a.m. and continued all day. We went off to the Bald Cypress swamp and had a wonderful paddle. It was quiet there, and very beautiful, one of the best paddles we’ve ever had.

Trussum Pond is about 5 minutes from the campground. We’d originally planned to kayak right near our campsite at Trap Pond, but it was very crowded on this pond – canoes, kayaks, paddleboarders, and fishing boats. We opted instead to go to Trussum Pond, a smaller pond near the campground but not right on it, figuring it would be less crowded. We were correct. A five-minute drive made a lot of difference! (If you would like to read more about the history of the bald cypress swamp in this area, please follow the link at the end of this blog post about campground information and history of the area.)

The kayaking was awesomely beautiful as we meandered between these incredible old Bald Cypress trees throughout the edges and middle of Trussum Pond. After paddling between large trees, you never knew what you’d see, at times a large Great Blue Heron would take off right in front of you when startled by the “noise” of water splashing off your paddles. Turtles of various sizes sunned themselves on logs lying in the tea-colored water. Large Turkey Vultures soared overhead. Because it was getting cooler as winter approaches, the colors in the bushes and trees varied from different shades of green to reds, yellows, and oranges. Sunlight filtered through dense woods surrounding the pond. It was a memorable experience, for sure.

We heard a man shouting in the distance. As we got closer and he continued yelling, we found out why. He’d just caught the biggest bass he’d ever seen, and the largest one of the day (he found out when he called it in to whomever keeps track of these things). We saw the same man later when he was taking his boat out of the water. He seemed dazed and in shock still. A day he will never forget. Grin.

We won’t forget today either. Pictures are below.

Hours later back at the RV, we had a celebratory drink and toasted the Pond and the Bald Cypress. Tomorrow we have a fairly short drive to our next destination, Martinak State Park in Maryland.
