A DRIVE, A HIKE, AND AMISH CANDY.
Day 24 – The chocolate-covered peanuts we got from the Amish store disappeared quickly and we MUST get more! Wonder what other goodies we might find. A drive is in our future. It was 45 degrees and sunny when we got up this morning.
We hung around for a couple of hours, then we took that drive. First we drove west of the campground and checked out the area. It really is very nice here. Presque Isle is a decent-sized city surrounded by rolling hills, either farming country or thick with beautiful trees. A river runs right through town, then intersects another river at the northern part of Presque Isle. There are many small lakes, too. Most roads have signs indicating that drivers should watch for cross country skiers in winter. And the roads around Easton, south & east of Presque Isle show a horse-drawn carriage and say to watch for them. It’s still early for planting many of the crops. Some potatoes have begun to bush out a little above ground, but many fields aren’t yet showing growth. When we were here three years ago, the fields were lush with various crops. We eventually went back east to the Amish store. They were up and running with a new sign out front and most of the boxes unpacked and the shelves full. They had run out of the homemade peanut butter cookies yesterday but still had some molasses cookies. We bought the last of the chocolate-covered peanuts, hoping they didn’t notice us salivating.
We got gas in the Honda on the way back to the RV. And after taking a picture of happy Luna on the dashboard, we had sandwiches for lunch.
It was a beautiful day and surprisingly fairly quiet at the campground this afternoon. The high today was 73 degrees; it was sunny with a nice breeze. We spent some time in the screened tent, and Rob took a three-mile hike on the trails that take you from the campground to the top of two peaks. The trails were quite steep and rough. He got some good pictures from the top of this pretty area, plus a snake, and a beautiful butterfly. If the weather is still good, we may go kayaking tomorrow.
