HEADING FOR HOME, MAINE.

Day 196 – At 6:45 a.m. this morning it was 32 degrees with snow flurries. We packed up for several days of traveling – the things you will need during those days of going from one campground to the next get packed away in accessible places for easy unpacking & repacking for the next day of travel. Everything from coffee-making supplies to toothbrushes to clothing changes to cat food, etc. gets put away towards the front of cupboards. The things you don’t use as often get placed in the back. At first when you’re doing this, it takes a lot of time, but after awhile you can whip right though packing & unpacking.

We departed our land after completely winterizing things there, dumping tanks & refilling with water, at 10:30 a.m.  It was 34 degrees with light snow. We were leaving just in time before the so-called upcoming Arctic Freeze arrived. It continued snowing, blowing sideways at times, until just below the I-95 near Augusta. The temperature dropped into the upper 20’s. We stopped for lunch at our normal pit-stop in Ellsworth near Bar Harbor, Martha’s Diner, for their excellent Crab Quiche.

We arrived at Recompense Shore Campground near Freeport, Maine at 3:55 p.m.  It was off-season for them but they allow camping in specific parts of the campground. Rates are reduced. Electricity is available at those sites offering it, but no water is available & no other services are offered off-season. We chose site #106 with 30 AMP electric hook-up, $27.25 per night. There were only a few campers here this time of year. It was perfect for a one-night stopover. We had the rest of last night’s delicious pizza for dinner & hit the sack early.

Recompense Shore Campground:  Note:  they call themselves Recompense Shore or Wolfe’s Neck Oceanfront Camping, either way they are located at 134 Burnett Road, Freeport, ME 04032; (207) 865-9307; www.freeportcamping.com. We’ve stayed here several times before. It’s a great place for a one-night stopover or for a much longer visit.
