FULL MOON RISING.
Day 3 – It was 57 degrees and sunny at 7:45 a.m., supposed to be much cooler today, plus we’ll be heading farther north along the coast. We’ll be going to Belfast, ME to one of our favorite campgrounds, Moorings Oceanfront RV Resort.

Recompense Shore Wolfe’s Neck Oceanfront Campground: 134 Burnett Road, Freeport, ME 04032, (207) 865-9307, info@freeportcamping.com. Located five miles from I-295 and five miles from downtown Freeport. 626 acres; four miles of oceanfront on Casco Bay. Spectacular views of farmland & sea. Hiking, biking, boating, bike & kayak rentals, on-site farm cafe (in season), farm-based activities, children’s activities, demonstration barnyards & gardens, and for campers – cabins, tent sites, RV sites – some located in grassy meadows, some in the forest, and some by the Ocean. The campground is open May through October, with limited sites/facilities available in the off-season. $28 to $55 plus tax depending on site location & amenities for campsites; see website for cabin information. We had site #104, in the wooded area overlooking the cows in the meadow, electric & water hook-ups included, and there is a dump station – $43.60 with Spring special pricing. A great campground. We’ve stayed here before & we’ll stay here again.
We left Recompense/Wolfe’s Neck at 10:15 a.m., 65 degrees and sunny. We drove north on I-295 to I-95 and continuing to Exit 113, East 3/Augusta. At this point you say good-bye to the Interstate Highways and begin the meander on smaller roads to the coast. At the end of Route 3, we turned north on U.S. Route 1. We stopped for gas, then drove a short distance to our campground, arriving at 12:25 p.m. It was partly cloudy, breezy, and 66 degrees.

Moorings Oceanfront RV Resort is a small campground right on the Penobscot Bay in Belfast, ME. We’ve stayed here many times. You definitely need reservations in the summer, made well in advance, particularly if you want an oceanfront campsite. There are only 8. The other sites have partial views but they are blocked by the RV in front of them. Last year we stayed a week in site #5 – a wonderful campsite on the water. This year, we were only staying one night & didn’t want to pay the extra money for the water sites, and we did not make reservations. No problem though, we were offered site #20, second row back and there was no one camping in front of us. We had the view & it was fantastic and less expensive. We lucked out. $59.95, full hook-ups. We unpacked, had lunch, and immediately set up the chairs outside. We read our books, took naps, enjoyed the scenery, and relaxed. The high today was 72 degrees. Perfect.

We went to dinner in Belfast to a favorite restaurant that we discovered last year, “Meanwhile in Belfast”. We highly recommend this restaurant. For dinner they have pizza which is freshly made with the best ingredients. You may not substitute items on your pizza. The pizzas are created with ingredients that blend together perfectly and cooked in a 900-degree oven for 90 seconds. We always get two different pizzas and split them. The drinks are equally inventive. The beer and wine are different than you find elsewhere & the cocktails are an adventure, to say the least. We tried the Muddled Strawberry & Basil Margarita, the Rosemary Bourbon (muddled rosemary, bourbon, fresh lemon juice & agave), and the Rye with Orange (can’t remember all the ingredients). They were temporarily out of the Habanero Tequila, so the Texas Margarita that we had last time was not an option. We also had the awesome, best-we’ve-ever-had, Tiramisu. At lunch there is a different menu with different sandwiches and bruschettas created with really different ingredient combinations. If you don’t feel like pizza for dinner & want fish at a waterfront setting, “Nautilus”, is also a good choice. But only staying one night, we made a choice and were quite happy with it.
Back to the RV, we were inside, windows open reading our books, when there was a knock on the door. At the same time we’d looked out and noticed the moon over the water, the man camped a few sites from us was going around knocking on doors, making sure everyone was seeing this incredible moon rising. People are nice that way.
