NEWFOUNDLAND – WOOHOO! A PARTIALLY SUNNY DAY!
Day 155 – At 7:30 this morning it was 44 degrees & cloudy. The weather forecast was for a partly sunny day with no rain. The last time we had that forecast, it was rainy & foggy from about the time we left to the time we got back to the RV. We were hoping for a better day, and we got it.
We first went to Stephenville to fill the propane tank for the RV. The nights are getting colder & since the electrical connection at the campground isn’t good, we’ve been using more propane than usual. Then we headed west again on Route 460, wanting to take the same trip we had made when we got fogged in & couldn’t see anything.
It was lovely this time. There were some black flies out since it wasn’t very windy, but at least we could see where we were going. The sun went in & out of the clouds, so we were able to get some pictures. We went back to Parc Boutte du Cap in Cape St. George & we had our lunch there. A really beautiful Park with wonderful views from the top of cliffs, it was so nice to see it well this time. The Northern Gannets were diving & the waves were crashing onto the rocks below us. The drive through all the small towns on the way to Cape St. George was much nicer this time because we could clearly see the water of St. George’s Bay, deep blue & contrasting with the yellows, golds, & reds of the fields between the highway & the Ocean. We reached the point where we’d turned around last time when the fog was so dense. Everything after that point today was new scenery for us. We saw a sign by the road about the site of an airplane crash. We turned in & spent some time there at the interpretive area. Rob went down to the site of the crash. We didn’t even know that all this was there. We continued on the loop, following the coastline to almost where the road ended, but turned around when the dirt road became too rough. This stretch of the peninsula was bordered on one side by the Ocean and the other side by the large Port au Port Bay. The few towns we passed on this desolate stretch of road were isolated but pretty. Back on the loop drive we reached the 460 again, drove a little ways, and then turned off on a 20 km side trip on the other side of the Port au Port Bay. There were few towns here also with very few houses. But on this side of the Bay it was different because the terrain had changed from ocean cliffs & beaches to mountains on one side of the road & trees. The homes were mostly at the end of long driveways overlooking the Bay with the mountain backdrop. Nice.

Although it was fairly cloudy at times, it was so nice to be able to see this area with every side road being different. The high today was 57 degrees. We got back to the RV around 4 p.m. & relaxed with the girls, who were in the same places sleeping as they’d been when we left. Nice to be missed!
