NEWFOUNDLAND – GROS MORNE NATIONAL PARK TO BLACK DUCK SIDING.
Day 151 – It was 41 degrees & cloudy at 7:30 a.m. this morning. We’d made the decision to leave Gros Morne earlier than planned to explore areas farther south while waiting for peak colors to arrive at the National Park. On Sunday we had scouted several campgrounds that would be staying open in the Park so that we’d know where to stay when we came back north in a week or two. We were surprised that the campground gave us a full refund for the nights we’d paid for already but were not staying. We departed the campground after dumping tanks at 11:30 a.m., heading south on Route 430. It was 53 degrees & with some sun.
It got more cloudy as we drove south, with some really beautiful clouds & a few fall colors in the trees. A nice drive. Most of the road work we’d encountered in the past had been completed which made the ride easier. Maybe our wheels on the Honda are still aligned. Boo potholes! At Deer Lake we left the 430 & got on the Trans-Canada Highway south. We eventually turned off the TCH and turned west on to Route 460.

We got to our new campground, Dhoon Lodge RV Resort in a town called Black Duck Siding, at 1:40 p.m. It was 57 degrees & partly cloudy; the wind was beginning to pick up some. We’ll have to find out where the name “Black Duck Siding” comes from while we’re here. We had never been to this campground, nor the peninsula where it’s located, so we didn’t know what to expect. It’s an independent campground, part of a complex with a lodge, a restaurant, cottages, and a campground. There were 36 campsites with full hook-ups (including sewer) for $35 per night, Canadian currency. About a third of the campsites were occupied. We picked site #9; there was no one camping near us. We had a late lunch, unpacked and made a loaf of bread for lunch tomorrow. The black flies were out; no we are not rid of them yet, but we doubt we’ll ever see them again as bad as they were in Labrador. It was getting windier & we actually welcomed the wind to keep the bugs away. The high today was 63 degrees.
