Day 82 – We got up & out without our usual relaxing morning; it’s a travel day. At 6:30 a.m. it was 58 degrees & cloudy. We departed Aroostook State Park at 8:55 a.m. after packing up, but we still had to dump tanks at Michaud’s, 3 miles north of the Park, because there was no dump station at Aroostook.
The drive to Lily Bay State Park was almost identical to the drive we made a couple of weeks ago, but this time we knew not to try taking the Golden Road. This time, though, there was no hold-up due to road work because it was a holiday weekend & they were not working on the roads. Traffic was light, the fields of Sunflowers had changed (now the flowers were hanging their “heads” due to the weight of the seeds in the flowers, the Oat fields had been harvested, and most of the stands by the side of the road had big bags of Potatoes for sale. Also, we were seeing color on the trees, indicating Fall was on its way. It does start earlier up here!

We arrived at Moosehead Lake & the State Park at 2:35 p.m. after stops for lunch at the same rest stop as before & a stop for gas. It was 78 degrees & partly cloudy. We’d been looking forward to this trip back to Lily Bay. We were lucky enough to nab site 16M, the best site in the Park, because someone had cancelled their four-day reservation. It had not been our original intent to visit this Park again this year, but we couldn’t pass up the opportunity to stay at this campsite. It is at the end of a spur road, away from the other campsites on the loop & is surrounded by water on 3 sides. You can kayak right out of the campsite. No need to drive to a boat launch.
When we were checked in at the Ranger’s Station, we filled the tank with fresh water & drove over to our site. The first thing we saw when we drove in & were leveling the RV was a huge Pileated Woodpecker climbing up the tree right in front of the vehicle. This bodes well! Rob did the outside unpacking & put up the screened tent while I did the indoor unpacking, and we settled in. It’s funny, every time we drive to a new campground & Rob leaves the RV to do stuff outside, the girls crowd around the screened door and meow & howl – where’s he going & is he coming back? I have to constantly tell them that it’ll be all right, he’s coming back. Then when he comes back inside, he has to fight his way in – they are all over him. I took a picture with the phone, but I need to make a video with sound to really do it justice.
This campsite is so nice, we could see ourselves putting a little house up here & moving in! We sat out in the tent by the water watching the Black Ducks float by & the Kingfishers diving for fish. The high today was 80 degrees. We can’t wait to kayak from here tomorrow.
