Day 65 – It was 64 degrees this morning, sunny & breezy, a very comfortable humidity level, YAAA. Rob took a bike ride; the kitties were in a very playful mood, and we’ll probably go kayaking later today. Looking good!

Almost all of the campsites surrounding us left today. The weekend campers will soon start coming in. Since there are so many campsites around us, we’ve been very lucky with quiet campers. Things may change now.  Also, something we haven’t yet encountered at other campgrounds, people walk between campsites, right by us, to get from one destination to another, which would be the water spigot or the restrooms. They were doing this rather than just walking around the sites by staying on the campground road. So we can be sitting in the screened tent, reading our books, and a group of people will cut through right by the tent. Seemed weird & rather rude to us. Then we discovered that the campground map shows a trail going through, right by our campsite. We should probably pay attention to these details, huh?

We saw that site #16M was vacated this morning. This was the campsite we’d seen a couple of days ago that was occupied but looked to be a great site. We quickly walked over there before the next campers checked in. Wanted to see it when it was empty. A group of ducks were waddling thru the site, quacking away. This campsite was outstanding. A water view on two sides with access right from the site for launching a kayak. Quiet & private, on a little hill at the end of a spur off the campground road, and it had space off in the trees overlooking the water, which would perfectly fit our screened tent. We now have this noted on the calendar for next year, to be reserved way in advance!

Gorgeous weather today, so after lunch we went kayaking at Prong Pond, which was about a 10-minute drive southeast from here. Why they call it a Pond, I don’t know.  It was bigger than lots of lakes we’ve seen. We chose to go there rather than Moosehead Lake at the campground, because it was windy and would be kicking up whitecaps on the Lake. Even though the Pond was smaller than the Lake – Moosehead Lake is the biggest Lake in Maine – we did have some pretty rough water at Prong Pond. It was fun, though, and the setting was really beautiful. We floated around several islands and had a visit from a Loon. It was a nice afternoon.

When we got back to our campsite, several new neighbors had moved in. On one side of us, an older couple, and on the other side of us, a family with kids. They seemed to be related since they went back & forth from one campsite to the other. We were sorry we were in their way. Three more sites close to us yet to fill for the weekend. We’ll see how that goes. Not that it matters in the long run; we were lucky to get this campsite at all since everything was already fully booked up.

We sat in the screened tent until dinner time, watching the traffic go by, either walking by, bicycling, or driving round & round in cars. We were marvelling at how few bugs we’ve encountered this August. A beautiful day, the high was 72 degrees, not humid, partly sunny.
