Day 184 – When we got up this morning, it was 26 degrees and sunny. We left at 10:10 a.m. after dumping tanks & getting fresh water. Five Deer ran alongside as we left the State Park, their fluffy white tails blowing in the wind.

165 miles

Lake Wappapello State Park, Rt. 2 Box 102, Williamsville, MO 63067, (573) 297-3232 or (573) 297-3817 or (800) 334-6946, www.corpslakes.us/wappapello. There’s two campgrounds at the State Park, one was closed when we were here. We stayed at The Ridge Campground & it’s open all year. Site #6, first-come, first-served. Most of the campsites in this campground were good. Off-season, with senior discount & 30 amp hook-up, we paid $8 per night. The campground is very clean and well-maintained, as are all the roads. The Park is WAY out there, not near cities, heavily wooded, hilly, in the Ozarks. The Lake is huge, a place that likely has tons of boaters here in the summer. Yet each area of the Park is spread out. A really nice State Park, worth visiting many times, and less than an hour away from the incredible Mingo NWR. We MUST come back when it’s warm enough to kayak at the Refuge.

Most of the drive to the St. Louis area was thru the Ozarks, but many miles before the big city we were passing more & more towns and populated areas. There was lots of traffic but we didn’t hit any traffic jams, arriving at 1:10 p.m. at the 370 Lakeside Park in St. Peter’s, MO. It was 46 degrees, still sunny, and the wind gusts were increasing. SO glad we weren’t driving later today. It’s almost 5 p.m. right now and the wind is howling and gusting, shaking the RV.

Last time we were here in the St. Louis area, it was April 2017. We stayed at a wonderful State Park and hoped to camp there again this time. But the Park requires that people stay two nights on a weekend and we’d planned to depart on Saturday morning. We looked around for other alternatives & found this new City Park, actually closer to St. Charles where my sister, Gayle, lives. She was nice enough to drive by & check it out for us in advance.

It’s a large Park on a Lake in a somewhat rural area with 50 campsites, all full hook-up. There’s a nice, 4 ½ mile, paved walkway around the Lake. If the wind ever calms down, we’ll ride our bikes around it. We were assigned site #207. For now, no one is parked next to us.

We went out to dinner with my sister – went to Bristol which is a restaurant at the Hilton – we went last year when we visited & we wanted to come back again. The restaurant is quite nice & last year we checked out the menu and were impressed, but what we did last time and tonight is eat in the bar, the Happy Hour menu which is amazing. A long list of appetizers just $7 each & happy hour for drinks, too. It was great to catch up with Gayle.
