STRONG WINDS.

Day 367 – We had thought about leaving today, but the winds are just too strong. If they are shaking the RV when we’re just sitting here and we have trees and bushes around us for protection, being on the open road would be dangerous. Tomorrow the winds are supposed to be lower in the morning than they were today, then they’ll build back up again. Therefore, to leave tomorrow (we have reservations elsewhere), we’ll have to leave before the sun comes up.

HUNKERING DOWN.

Day 366 – It was cold and very windy today. We didn’t go anywhere, just hunkered down inside the RV. The normally-placid lake was kicking up waves. Even the fishermen didn’t come out; the fish got a day off from hiding from the fishing pole hooks. The temperature struggled to get above 49 degrees all morning.

TRAVEL DAY

From: Little White River Recreation Area, between Tuthill & Martin, SD.

To: Merritt Reservoir State Recreation Area, West Beed’s Campground, southwest of Valentine, NE.

Day 363 – We were up at 7 a.m., 41 degrees and sunny. We departed Little White River Recreation Area in South Dakota at 10 a.m. It was 57 degrees with full sun. We did not have reservations at our next destination because we were visiting off-season. Of the campgrounds that were still open in the Merritt Reservoir State Recreation Area in Nebraska, all sites were first-come, first-served.

BLOWIN’ IN THE WIND.

Day 10 – It was still windy at 2 a.m. when I got up to check on the girls. They were sleeping on their heating pads, oblivious to the pandemonium outside. Still clear out; I could see plenty of stars in the sky. Gracie came in later & joined us in bed, the three of us cuddling in the blankets where it felt safe.

TRUCKIN’.

Day 9 – We figured we’d be putting some extra miles on the RV today, and we did. What was totally cool was that we crossed into Mountain Time & gained an hour towards the end of today’s trip – we didn’t know that was happening yet so that was a nice surprise. It was nice to have an extra hour after a long day of driving thru Nebraska. We’ve gotta admit, the idea of driving for hours through NE had been daunting. Like Kansas, we thought it was going to be miles & miles of nothing; yawn, boring (no offense intended to people living in the midwest). But it turned out to be more interesting than we’d expected.
