Day 52 – No more sleeping in for us; the kitties got Rob up at 6:30. Last night it rained lightly for awhile; this morning it’s still overcast & humid, 67 degrees at 7:30 a.m.  The Loons were calling this morning, sounding a little like Benedictine Monks chanting, gorgeous. Approaching the weekend, 4 more campsites were filled yesterday. Rob took a bike ride in the hills again, this time going farther.

After lunch we went down the hill to make our phone call & check for messages. Then we took a drive on some backroads, mostly farmland & some very nice houses nestled in the hills east of Colebrook. Headed north on the 145 out of Colebrook, hoping to see some Moose. Beautiful country, heavily forested, rolling hills, great views, gorgeous lakes. No Moose. Was it propaganda when we read that there are lots of Moose in the Summer here? (We’ve been here during rutting season in the Fall and saw plenty, so we know they do exist.) We went to all the popular places, Moose Alley, etc., but nothing.

We passed Connecticut Lakes 1, 2, and 3, stopping to check out the kayak launches at each one. Dark clouds were rolling in, but we hadn’t ruled out some kayaking. We stopped just below the Canadian border at  Deer Mountain Campground,  an older Forest Service campground. Drove through and checked out the campsites & talked to the ranger on duty. It is a small campground located between Second & Third Connecticut Lakes, near excellent kayaking & fishing opportunities. There are 23 campsites and several small cabins. No potable water, no dump station, no hook-ups. Only four sites were large enough for our RV, and only two of those sites had any privacy. Plenty of decent tent sites, though, and only about half of them were occupied.

The ranger told us about another kayak launch located on the next dirt road south of the Campground, “Sophie’s Lane”. We drove to the launch site, but it wasn’t easily launchable. It was, however, very pretty and we walked around and took a few pictures. Things to keep in mind if we were to camp there sometime.

It began raining on our way back towards Colebrook. Still no Moose, not even on Route 3. The high today was 72 degrees, cloudy & humid. We got back to the RV around 6 p.m., sat out in the tent briefly, then closed up the screened tent, and it was time for dinner. We relaxed, reading our books, and enjoyed the sound of the rain on the roof of the RV.
