NEWFOUNDLAND – SOUTH OF TWILLINGATE ISLAND.

Day 81 – Question of the day:  Do Dogs Moan? We are cat people. For all you dog people – do dogs moan?  We ask because this morning the fog horn was going off, but in addition to that forlorn noise, there was another which followed. It really sounded like a dog moaning – and we are surrounded by dogs. Everyone around here has a dog. OR alternatively, is someone being held captive in an RV nearby?

Other than the strange noises we heard this morning when we opened the bathroom ceiling air vent & fan, everything was normal at 8:30 a.m.  We slept in; it was humid & warm when we got up, around 53 degrees, and it had rained during the night. Pretty cloudy with some fog, we knew this wasn’t a day to rush out and enjoy the sunlight. By the way, “humid” here is not like humid in the southern U.S.  It just means a little damp. I am thinking that if this is the extent of summer in Newfoundland, bring it on! We look at the weather in New York, Maryland, and the east coast of the USA and it is darn hot this summer. SO glad we are here!

We left the RV at a little before 1 p.m. and went to lunch at the little cafe in town where we’d eaten lunch before. They have daily specials and today’s special was Macaroni & Cheese with Garlic Bread. This is the little bakery & cafe run by the two little old ladies out of their home. They do quite a local business, and it’s better than the standard restaurant which brings in the bus tour crowds. Our lunch was excellent.  Macaroni & Cheese, NF-style, is served as a baked dish, not a bowl of macaroni with runny-ish cheese. This was baked and we were served a chunk on a plate with garlic cheese bread (that was awesome). The mac ‘n cheese was not overly filling and was quite good. Perfect for lunch without being too filling, we brought home some more chocolate-covered peanut cluster bars for the future.

We drove south below Twillingate Island to small peninsulas with towns like Tizzard’s Harbour, Little Harbour, Valley Pond, Moreton’s Harbour, Bridgeport, Chance Port, and Virgin Arm. Our favorite on this peninsula was Tizzard’s Harbour at the tip of the land mass, the village with the best views. We also visited small towns Hillgrade & Fairbank, both lovely, and one of them had an extremely busy Lobster Pound that we MUST visit for lunch or dinner – YUM. Fresh lobster right off the boat, there’s nothing like it. Before turning around and heading back to the RV, we checked out a small peninsula farther south. Luke’s Arm, Strong’s Island, and Cottlesville were all nice, but more populated & not as old. Tizzard’s Harbour was surrounded by rocky cliffs and forested hills; it reminded us of our favorite areas at the Burin Peninsula, an area which really captivated us recently.

Back at the RV, we had some wine & beer, dinner, and spent time with the babies. They are doing well, except for the times that people are driving by a lot. This bugs them. One might think they are just like us & prefer peace and quiet, LOL. The high today was 59 degrees with only a tiny bit of sun peaking out in the afternoon.

Weird, I read your entry on commute home yesterday and just assumed dogs are howling at the foghorn. Then last night I was reading a book that talked about karman vortex street and it reminded me of your moaning dogs!
