NEWFOUNDLAND – ROAD TO THE ISLES.

Day 82 – Today was a beautiful day & we spent it wisely with a ride by ferry to visit an island, a great dinner on the deck of a restaurant overlooking the harbor, and to top it all off, an incredible sunset back near the campground.

Twillingate, NF

We woke up to beautiful weather, packed up our lunches, and headed out for the drive to the ferry terminal at Farewell, NF, at the northeast corner of New World Island. The drive was about an hour. We got in line for the ferry to Fogo Island. It left promptly at 11:30 a.m.

The peninsula where we are camping at Twillingate has signs calling it the “Road to the Isles”. After the portion of land that sticks out of the mainland, there are several causeways which connect islands to each other and to the peninsula. Twillingate is one of these islands; another is New World Island. You really don’t even notice that the Twillingate area & the New World area are islands. But off of these islands are other islands that are not connected to the land base by causeways. A ferry travels to two of these islands: Fogo, and Change.

We had a good trip. We sat outside on the back deck along with a few people who had dogs. We had fun watching these people and their dogs all interact. The scenery was beautiful, the sun was out, the sea was calm & so was the wind. We sat by a woman who was going to Fogo Island for a family reunion. She had lived in NF for 49 years, raised a family there, and was born & raised in Nova Scotia. She told us that there was a nice campground, right on the Ocean, on Fogo Island. We did not know this and had no plans to stay on the Island. But of course, we now had to check this out.

We spent the afternoon looking for the campground, and after finding it, trying to get a site reserved for the future. Yes, Island camping is coming next for us. We drove around part of the Island, visiting two towns – charming.  Now, soon, we will learn all about real isolation, living an hour an a half from yet another island in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. It is a good-sized island with 11 communities.

We left Fogo Island at 4:30 p.m. and then after arriving on New World Island at Farewell, we drove back to the “slow” side of Twillingate to a restaurant called “The Canvas Cove Bistro”. We sat on the outside deck overlooking the harbor and had dinner and a drink. It was great. Rob had beer from Ontario, Canada, Collective Arts IPA, and I had a Caesar, which is like a bloody mary but spicier. We split a Kale Caesar Salad with homemade focaccia and a bread olive oil dipping sauce. The Caesar Salad was the best we’d ever had, different than the States, and the bread + oil were perfect. Rob got the Boiled Lobster dinner and loved it. I had Pan Fried Cod served on top of fresh, perfectly cooked vegetables. They take the very fresh Cod and cook it briefly in a cast iron skillet in very hot (but not browned or burnt) butter – crispy on the outside and melt-in-your-mouth perfect on the inside. We split a piece of homemade fresh Berry Pie.     Awesome!

We drove back to the RV and saw that the harbor beyond the Park was in perfect light as the sun was going down. A great end to a great day. The high today was 75 degrees & sunny.
