NEWFOUNDLAND – TWILLINGATE & VICINITY.
Day 80 – It was sunny & breezy this morning. A caravan of huge RV’s came in, more than ten of them lined up, most of them camping in a row together. We thought it would be noisy but it wasn’t. They’re off doing things together, so the campground is fairly quiet – for now.
It was supposed to rain this afternoon so we left early to see things before the rain came. First stop was the lighthouse at Crow Head, a small village north of Twillingate. The Long Point lighthouse is one of those bus tour stops; everyone comes to see the lighthouse. When we were here campground scouting last week, we couldn’t even get into the parking lot, there were so many people there (and all we wanted was a restroom, LOL). Today we went there first thing hoping to beat the crowds. It was already a little busy, and we were only there maybe 20 minutes, but by that time a large bus had come in and the tourists were getting out to view the lighthouse or go to the gift store. We left.

We drove to all the coastal villages in the vicinity of Twillingate, every little road we could find. And it was interesting – it only takes about two blocks and you are away from the crowds and back in quiet, fishing-village surroundings again. We saw beautiful islands in the bays and even an iceberg in the very far distance. That was amazing – it’s July! We checked out the boat tours and the restaurants and the stores and Rob hiked a trail. And then it was lunchtime so we went back to the RV, had lunch, and went out again to do more of the same.
It started to rain lightly around 3 p.m. and we’d pretty much covered all of the Twillingate Island area, so we drove back towards the campground, stopping at the little bakery & cafe for some homemade chocolate-covered peanut bars. The high today was 72 degrees, but once it started raining & the sun went behind the clouds, it dropped to a little above 60 degrees. Now that we’re in a place that has some restaurant possibilities AND we have an internet connection, I’m going to look at menus online and salivate while deciding where we can go this week. The next places we go may not have any restaurants, so we need to eat now, grin. Oh boy!
