THE SOUTH HUMBER ARM PENINSULA.
Day 152 – It was 57 degrees this morning when we got up, and it reached 62 degrees today. From the weather forecast, it looked like today would be the best day for a longer scenic drive. It’s supposed to rain the next three days.

We were glad we did this drive today. The scenery was amazing, with parts of it again like Gros Morne National Park with the mountains reaching down to the sea and the islands at the end of the bay. Corner Brook is a large, attractive city with hills and mountains around it on three sides. The City is built somewhat layered on hills and overlooks the Bay of Islands, a group of gorgeous rocky islands in a large bay. The Humber River feeds into this bay.
Two roads travel from Corner Brook to the opening of the Bay and the Ocean, one road on each side of the bay – Routes 440 & 450. Today we drove the longer road, Route 450. We stopped at several turnouts, did some walking around staring at the beauty of it all, took some pictures, and had lunch in Lark Harbour near the end of the road.
The clouds, in places, were dramatic and the sun wasn’t always out, but the shadows just made it more beautiful. There were a couple of large waterfalls, and we could only wonder what they’d be like in the spring when the waterfalls are dropping the most water from the snow melt. Since it is now off season, the fishing villages were quiet. People are already preparing for the upcoming winter. The wood piles are stacked tall. When we were here in 2019, there was a small plot of land for sale, and at that time we debated whether to pursue it. We checked it out again today and it’s still lovely there (and not for sale). It has hills on all sides & overlooks the small fishing harbor at Little Port, at the end of the road. The only drawback was that a popular hiking trail up the mountain traveled right behind the land for sale. We took a picture of the property.

Lunch was at Myrtle’s on the Bay Pub & Eatery, a small place right on the Bay in Lark Harbour. Judging from the pictures on the walls and some of the other memorabilia, Myrtle’s had been there for awhile. It was obviously very popular with the local Newfies since they have Dart Tournaments weekly, live entertainment, and around there, everyone knows your name – remember ‘Cheers’? Grin. They are open every day from noon til midnight. We split the Garlic Shrimp appetizer and each had the Fish n’ Chips. The food was excellent; we would go back again if in the area.
There are a couple of shorter drives around here, which we’ll do even if it’s a rainy day ahead. We also need to run some errands. Before we know it, we’ll be moving further south towards the ferry trip back to Nova Scotia.
