SENDING POSITIVE THOUGHTS YOUR WAY, GAIL!

TRAVEL DAY

From: Gateway to the North RV Park, Deer Lake, NL.

To:Oceanside RV Park, Port au Choix, NL.

Day 118 – It rained during the night and continued raining all day today. When we got up, it was 57 degrees with no wind. We packed up and got ready to go to our next destination. Right before we leave in the RV, Rob hooks the Honda up to the RV to be towed behind us, while I wait in the driver’s seat of the RV for him to give me a sign that he is ready to check all the lights. Today he came back inside to say that there was a problem with the power to the brake unit. No power means we cannot safely tow the vehicle.

140 miles (2:55) 66130-66270
Cumulative travels in the RV and car in Newfoundland from 05/16/2023 to 08/15/2023, 6,630 miles
Cumulative travels in the RV from 04/20/2023 to 08/15/23 3,443 miles, 62827-66270

Mr. Fix-It wins again. Rob solved the problem by replacing the plug with a spare he had on hand. He had to trouble-shoot the auxiliary brake unit, which applies the brakes in the car when the RV brakes are applied. The problem was the plug had broken. He had to solder the spare plug onto the power cord.

Meanwhile, after a decent delay that had the girls wondering why they were cooped up in the bedroom if they weren’t going anywhere -or- marveling at what a smooth ride it was so far, we departed at 10:50 a.m. It was 58 degrees and still raining.

We headed north from Deer Lake on Route 430, staying on this highway until turning off on Route 430-28 going northwest for a short distance to Port au Choix. The drive was very scenic since much of it was traveling through Gros Morne National Park. Beyond the Park, most of the remaining drive was along the ocean. The road was in excellent shape, recently paved, until we turned off to Port au Choix. Wonderful! The only drawback was since the weather was overcast, the scenery wasn’t nearly as gorgeous as we’ve seen in the past. In about a month we’ll be heading back south on this route and will have another chance to capture the beauty of this area in pictures.

We arrived at the Oceanside RV Park, a town park run by the Lion’s Club, at 1:45 p.m. It was 58 degrees, windy and still raining. This campground is right on the water; we’ve stayed here twice before and will be staying here again twice this trip. We had made reservations for 4 nights. When we arrived, we were allowed to pick our campsite rather than being assigned a site. The campground is not large, and when we arrived only two campsites were occupied. We chose site #18. We had electric and water hook-ups; there is a dump station at the Park.

We had driven straight through without taking a break, so we were very hungry. Before unpacking, we had lunch and the girls were quite ready to take their break. They were a bit confused, though, when we unpacked and stayed where we were – rather than putting them back in the bedroom for the rest of the journey. We all get used to doing things a certain way, even the cats.

The high today was 62 degrees on the road. The rain lessened and the wind increased. It is very overcast but we can clearly see the ocean in front of the RV. We’re hoping we have better visibility tomorrow. By the end of the day, more campsites were occupied, but it was quiet since everyone was hunkered down inside.
