CONGRATULATIONS BENNY & KELSEY AND WELCOME TO LITTLE HARRISON! 7/18/2023!
Day 92 – It was so foggy and humid that we’re having a difficult time keeping the RV dry (and ultimately mold-free). The high temperature yesterday was 71 degrees & the low last night was 67, but the dense fog remains. We’ve had gusty winds the whole time during our stay in St. Bride’s. The wind blows the moisture from the fog into the open windows and we have to walk around with a rag and keep drying everything off.

Rob attempted to go to St. Mary’s Ecological Reserve this morning, thinking it might be less foggy there, but he turned around and came back. He said it was the thickest fog he’d ever seen; he couldn’t see the road in front of him to drive. We may attempt a sight-seeing drive after lunch today north of here. Maybe it will be less foggy away from the end of the peninsula.
Later: After lunch we took that drive north and drove a loop, heading east out of Placentia inland where the fog disappeared. Looping south, then west back to Placentia, it was then very pretty since the fog had moved some back out to sea. We passed a handmade sign by the highway that said, “Slow, Duck Crossing”, and sure enough a family of Geese had just crossed the road to the other side. They posed nicely for us. The drive south back towards St. Bride’s, also was less foggy and it had warmed up a little.

In St. Bride’s we stopped for dinner at Da Bird’s Eye, a cafe where, in 2019, we had the best fish ‘n chips we’d ever had. Now that we are much more experienced in Newfie fish ‘n chips, we wanted to see if they were still that good. The verdict? At least as good as the dinners we’ve already had this trip, if not better.
After dinner, it was fairly clear in St. Bride’s and the wind had died down somewhat. We decided to take a chance on the Ecological Reserve and drove back out there. Only a few kilometers after St. Bride’s, it was densely foggy again and windy. Just in case the fog and wind had lifted at the Reserve by the time we got there, we went ahead and drove to the interpretive center where the hike to Bird Rock begins. Rob headed on out while I took a few flower pictures on the way to the interpretive center. Just a few minutes later, Rob appeared heading back towards me in the fog. He’d asked the ranger if they’d had any breaks in the fog all day, and she said no, it was bad all day. We drove back to the RV in St. Bride’s where we could see more around us than heavy fog. Basically, the consensus around here is that, “If you don’t want the fog, don’t come to Newfoundland in July.”

At the RV, it was very pretty out over the water. We are watching and waiting to see if there’s a nice sunset here. The girls are ready for their dinner and being rather obvious about it. It’s amazing how bratty they become when they’re hungry!
