A SHORTER DRIVE.
Day 93 – It rained last night and it was cooler this morning, 61 degrees. Too foggy again for a birdwatching trip to Cape St. Mary’s, we hung around the RV until after lunch. The wind had decreased and at least here, the fog had lifted somewhat. Then we went out for a drive south and east with a plan to stop and check out the fog status at the Cape.

We first stopped at the port in St. Bride’s, not far from where we are staying. Next in line was the Ecological Reserve but it was still quite foggy, so we drove continued past it to a sign directing us to the road to Point Lance. It was a nice little drive on a well-maintained two-land road. It wasn’t very foggy until we got down close to the Ocean, and it was a beautiful area. Point Lance was a small town, and it didn’t look as old as some of the smaller coastal towns we’ve seen. We do tend to look for the charm and history of the older villages. Many of the homes in Point Lance were “St. John-dized”, but the long beach was lovely and there was a fairly new boardwalk along it. Strange that the little road to Point Lance was in much better condition than the major two-lane roads that are the only means for vehicular travel near the coast on these peninsulas.

We returned to Route 100 and drove to Branch, a larger town about the size of St. Bride’s where we are staying. Branch had the older homes and a larger, bustling port, plus a convenience store with a restaurant and a gas station. Fancy that. We stopped at their beach and took pictures of the cliffs and Ocean.

We turned around and headed back on bumpy Route 100. Again, we tried Cape St. Mary’s but the fog was quite dense. Oh well, next time we’ll try a different time of year. At least Rob was able to get some pictures during his foggy visit. Tomorrow we will drive to a one-night stopover on our way to a longer visit to the Burin Peninsula and Frenchman’s Cove Provincial Park. This is one of our (many) favorite places here.
