ON THE ROAD AGAIN.
TRAVEL DAY
From: Home, New York.
To: Wolfe’s Neck Oceanfront Camping, Freeport, Maine (ME).
Day 1 – It was 41 degrees, clear & sunny, at 6 a.m. this morning when we got up. We departed home at 8:45 a.m. (45 degrees) and were a bit sad to leave. We really do love our home. The girls felt the same, particularly Pixie, who did NOT want to go back to the bedroom, their traveling place in the RV. As we were getting ready to leave, we realized something was missing. No, not a cat, but the camera! Um, we don’t want to forget that!

It’s lots of work to pack up for a long trip! Luckily we were home for months and could plan. We ordered supplies, waited for delivery, and took our time to make sure everything was packed up and placed in cupboards, storage compartments, pantry, freezer, and refrigerator somewhat in order of what items would be needed first, followed by those that would be needed later. Once we had everything packed up and all chores were completed, including Rob’s work on the generator, we were ready to go.
Go where, you might wonder? The plan for Trip 10 is to visit our land in Maine first, followed by some time in Atlantic Canada, returning to our land and then home again when it get too cold in Maine (for dental appointments in mid-November 2023). Most campgrounds in Maine and further north do not open until some time in May. Therefore, at first, before the May openings, we will travel farther to reach each campground, with the main goal to be just getting to the next destination. There won’t be a lot of staying in one place until we find availability at all the campgrounds in Newfoundland, for example.
Our plan will be to spend 1 ½ weeks at our land first, spending only a few days to get there. We heard we have trees down, some leaning on electrical wires, and we want to have this taken care of. We hope to depart for New Brunswick, Canada in early May and spend several days getting from there to Nova Scotia. On May 16, we have reservations for taking the ferry from North Sydney, Nova Scotia to Port Aux Basques, Newfoundland. We will spend the next 4 ½ months in NF, traveling to our favorite places from our 2019 trip, allowing more time to revisit each of those sites. We plan to leave NF in early October with time to spend at an area we’ve never visited – Cape Breton in Nova Scotia. Then we will travel back to our land in Maine until it gets too cold, usually early November.
Back to today: we drove the standard route from home to Maine, but instead of stopping once or twice for an overnight stay, we drove straight through to Freeport, making quick stops for gas in the RV, a snack break for the girls, and a lunch stop at a rest area in New Hampshire. We noticed the differences between states as the temperature dropped and the new Spring growth was replaced by Winter’s bare trees; there were much fewer Spring flowers and that beautiful, almost-fluorescent green that appears on the trees and bushes. We reminded ourselves that we’d get Spring again as it appeared in Canada and our Summer would be much cooler up north – one of the biggest reasons we like to make these trips. Traffic wasn’t too bad, and except for some road construction and one bad accident we encountered, we made good time.

We arrived at Wolfe’s Neck Oceanfront Camping in Freeport, ME at 3:45 p.m. It was 55 degrees and sunny. We’ve stayed at this campground many times, always going to or from our land in Maine. It does not open for the season until early May. But there are a few campsites that are available year-round (when there’s no snow on the ground). Services are limited off-season, therefore rates are reduced & most amenities are unavailable. We chose site #410. It had electric hook-ups only; water and the dump station were not available yet. Once done pouting, the girls slept quietly until we arrived at the campsite. When released from the bedroom, they immediately ran to their favorite spots in the RV, happy to be through traveling for the day. We unpacked and relaxed. We were on our way once again.

Safe travels on your new adventure!!
