TRAVEL DAY

From: Prince Rupert RV Campground, Prince Rupert, BC.

To: Kleanza Creek Provincial Park, Terrace, BC.

Day 312 – It was cloudy this morning when we got up and 57 degrees. We departed Prince Rupert RV Campground at 10:55 a.m. Getting on the 16/Yellowhead Highway, we headed east. There wasn’t much traffic and it was foggy.

It was only ten minutes before we were completely out in the wilderness again. It looked very much like northern Vancouver Island with all the trees and the nearly-empty two-lane highway. Until we reached the city of Terrace, two hours later, we saw very few buildings and no cities.

The Skeena River soon appeared through the trees to the right of us, railroad tracks next to us on the left and beyond, mountains and trees. The fog began to dissipate. It was really beautiful. The River, at first, was very wide, and it was like being by a fjord again with tree-covered islands in the distance on the other side of the river. The Skeena River was beside us the whole way to Terrace. Further along the mountains became taller, more dramatic, and many still had snow on top. The fog had burned off and it was sunny. The highway kept winding thru the mountains with the River beside us. It was so pretty. We drove by an accident where a truck had run off the road almost onto the railroad tracks. I was thinking that the driver must’ve been stunned (as we were) by the scenery, and wasn’t watching the road.

The mountains were tall enough that there were Avalanche Warning signs – something we’ll be seeing more of in the next six weeks. And soon we’ll be going to the Icefield Parkway (Banff and Jasper National Parks) – it was so beautiful here; we can’t imagine how it beautiful it will be and what we’ll see when we arrive at our destinations in the month of September.

We arrived at our campground for the next three nights – Kleanza Creek Provincial Park, about 15 minutes beyond the city of Terrace. It was 1:15 p.m., sunny and 79 degrees. There was a nice breeze going. We moved into site #1. We were happy to see there were lots of trees; it was supposed to reach near 90 degrees this afternoon. We had no hook-ups, so all the shade we could get was welcome. The campsite was on a hill with Kleanza Creek below, rushing by and sounding much larger than it was. We had lunch and set up camp. The girls liked it here immediately. Around us there was nothing to see but trees, and it was quiet. Better than being on a noisy ferry, they say.
