A QUIET WEEKEND DAY, SORT OF.

Day 299 – Even though it’s a Saturday in August, prime vacation time, today was quiet in the campground. We heard voices now and then and a car went by on the campground road a couple of times – that’s it. Except for a possible bear or cougar.

We stayed at the RV today doing things like hair washing and cooking, but otherwise just relaxed, spending quality time with the kitties. We went out to the screened tent in the afternoon, read our books and napped. It was a beautiful day with a high of 69 degrees and full sun with a light breeze.

After an early dinner, we went back out to the tent with our books. We kept hearing noises from the woods and at first ignored it, thinking it was coming from a campsite in the distance. And it might have been just that. But the noise was strange. It was in the bushes, occasionally we heard a twig crack like someone or something was walking in the woods, but almost continually there was the sound of something being dragged or yanked at or trying to be torn apart? Like a bear trying to open a cooler (or maybe a person who was in the woods trying to open a cooler)? Or possibly something being ripped or shredded? So just in case of a bear, we’d heard you make noise to let it know you are there. So I hollered HEY and coughed loudly and banged metal water jugs around. I mean, you are in a tent and a bear comes crashing out of the woods – what do you do? Rob is like, oh it’s probably nothing, don’t worry about it, because he knows what a scaredy-cat I am. So, we go back to reading and the noise starts up again with a twig breaking and then a hiss. Yes, a hiss! Or to me, it sounded like a hiss. (Cougars are also here in northern BC and warnings have said that they are harder to scare away than a bear – confront it, don’t run from it, don’t lie down and play dead, make noise, make yourself look big and threatening, etc.) I said to Rob, did you hear that – I am not sticking around in this tent waiting to see what it is, I’m outta here. And he followed me back to the hard walls and door that could be locked in the RV. We never saw or heard any more. I wonder if there will be nightmares tonight?
