LOWER QUADRA ISLAND.
Day 280 – We familiarized ourselves with the area around lower Quadra Island today. This morning Rob walked over to the other end of the campground where the laundry facilities were – we have lots of laundry to do while we are here. He was surprised to see a Deer near the laundry room door, chomping on some grass. The Deer wasn’t the least bit concerned about him.
After lunch at the RV we drove around the lower part of the Island. We stopped at the Cape Mudge Lighthouse which is in walking distance from the campground. We saw a lot more Deer today; there are so many here. Most of the roads on the Island are located around two areas: the ferry terminal that services Campbell Island, on the west side of the Island; and the ferry terminal that services Cortes Island, on the east side of the Island. Near to the ferry terminals there are a few stores, restaurants, inns and lodges, and that’s about it. We’ve only seen one gas station. There are few roads otherwise. There is a road that goes to the south end of Quadra – that leads to the lighthouse, an indian reservation, some houses, and the campground/restaurant/lodge where we are staying. It only took us a couple of hours to drive these few roads on the lower part of the Island.
Back at the RV, we sat outside and watched the activity on the water. We only saw one Humpback Whale today – we heard it blow, then looked in the direction the sound came from and saw it dive. Our neighbor two sites down was waving his arms and jumping up and down in excitement. So cool.
We went out to dinner at the Lodge. It’s a large, beautiful building overlooking the water. Floor-to-ceiling windows in the back treat diners to a view if they eat inside. There are two patios outside, also overlooking the water, where you can also eat outside. We ate on one of the patios. While we were eating, a large Bald Eagle flew right over us – glad it didn’t go for our food! Speaking of food, the meal was excellent. They also serve breakfast and lunch. We will be trying those, too, before we leave the Island. Guests who are staying at the Lodge have rooms overlooking the water. Wish we could see what a room looks like. When leaving the Lodge, a Deer was eating grass by the parking lot. They are everywhere!
Back at the RV after dinner, Rob got sunset pictures. The high today was 69 degrees. The sun came out in the late afternoon. There was very little wind.
