CIBOLA NWR 2.
Day 121 – The high today was 83 degrees with full sun. It cools off rapidly as soon as the sun goes down but is warm enough to not use the heat most nights. And most of the time there is a nice breeze. Spring appears to have already arrived here. During the day, a Hawk replaced the Heron in the tree outside our RV – guess it’s a great viewing point of the water below.
In the morning we hung around catching up on some things, then after lunch we sat outside in the screened tent until about 3 p.m. Then we went, followed by Cathie & Pete, to the Hart Mine Marsh unit of Cibola National Wildlife Refuge. On the way there we saw a very different animal crossing the road (too quickly to get a picture). Cathie saw a Roadrunner, too. Later Cathie looked it up and discovered we all had seen a Lemur! I also saw a Roadrunner at a different location and later a Coyote. Nice scenery, with or without the birds and animals. The Cibola Lake area was closed to protect roosting birds and will reopen when that season ends. The Marsh was gorgeous and looked like it would be great for kayaking, in season.
We then went to the main unit of the Refuge and drove through on Goose Loop. Because it was later in the day, the Snow Geese, Canada Geese, and Sandhill Cranes had left the pond where they spend the day with all their Duck friends. Many ducks still remained and later a few Snow Geese flew in. We did not see any Burrowing Owls this time, but the Kestrels and Mountain Bluebirds were out along with a group of Red-Winged Blackbirds.
It was almost dark when we got back to the RV. Cathie put Pete to bed (he was very tired because they went kayaking earlier in the day), and she came over with her dinner; we ate in the tent. A good day.
