Day 120 – This morning we went to Cibola National Wildlife Refuge; we saw lots of birds in 2018 when we were here previously and hoped to do the same this year. Today we were there about 2 hours and had only gone about 1/10 of this section of the Refuge because we spent lots of time on the 1-mile hiking trail. Were we successful? Yep.
It was lunch time, and since the Refuge is so close to the campground, we could easily go back to the RV for a lunch break. We’d planned to come back and finish this part of the Refuge this afternoon. Just as we finished lunch, Cathie & Pete arrived to catch-up with us for another group camping session. She was able to get a site within a close proximity but with plenty of privacy. Nice!
While she went into town to get water followed up by setting up camp at Oxbow, we went back to the NWR and completed the Goose Drive. After the wildlife drive at the main section of the Refuge, we drove to one of the other units attached to Cibola NWR, the Island Unit. The pictures from both drives are included below:
Back at the RV, we got together with Cathie for dinner in the tent, then when the sun had set and it got colder, we went inside and hung out. While we were in the tent and it was nearly dark, a large bird slowly rose from the water and gracefully landed in a tree by the RV. A Great Blue Heron. Because it was dark, it was mostly a well-defined large bird shadow; we couldn’t see colors. But the Heron spent the night there. The high was 78 degrees; it was sunny and there was a light breeze.
