MARICOPA, AZ.
Day 107 – It was 44 degrees this morning when we got up, no wind and sunny. After our coffee and morning routine, we drove to Maricopa for a couple of grocery items. We’d expected to consider ourselves lucky to even find a grocery store. Surprise, Maricopa turned out to be a city of more than 58,000 people, and we had our choice of stores. We even got sandwiches from Jersey Mike’s.
We’d thought Phoenix was the closest large city to our campground, and we didn’t want to hassle with that. Maricopa was surrounded by Indian land; the first sign of a city was a large Harrah’s Casino with lots of cars in its huge parking lots. Immediately thereafter we entered Maricopa. We saw no old buildings. Many new housing projects were being built. Shopping center after shopping center lined the major highway. It all looked brand new. Between our campground and the Casino there had been nothing but flat empty farm fields. You never know.
After lunch we sat outside and read our books. The high today was 62 degrees and the afternoon was rather breezy. Tomorrow we leave for our next campground. It’s in the Painted Rock desert and supposedly there are petroglyphs. Should be interesting.
