TRAVEL DAY

Day 104 – We woke up this morning looking forward to getting out of Dodge, or should we say “away from cities and crowds”. At 7:45 a.m. it was 43 degrees (warmer) and partly cloudy with some wind. We watched out the front of the RV as people walking dogs passed by, and one sweet older man with cats in a cat stroller went by a couple of times chanting love songs to the cats to reassure them. So cute. Lots of RVs left, weekend over for them, I guess. Changing of the guard: one leaves and another takes its place.
We departed at 11 a.m., the dumping of tanks and the filling with fresh water completed at the campsite. It was 56 degrees. We got gas in the RV. It took us awhile to get out of the sprawl of Tucson (and judging from the map, Phoenix, north and west of Tucson off I-10, was even larger). Topography changed somewhat. We were not as high in elevation as we had been. There were more flat lands. Less Yuccas, more Saguaro cactus. Some volcanic rock, warmer temperatures.
We reached our campground at 12:55 p.m. It was a very comfortable 67 degrees with a breeze & hazy sunlight. Jim Kortsen West Pinal Park is a County Park. Rob hit the jackpot when he found this Park on AllStays, an excellent source of campground info along with Campendium, both available online. We had reservations for two nights, but immediately upon seeing the privacy at this campground, we knew we might stay longer. The Park offers no hook-ups. We did have a picnic table and grill, both covered to spare campers from the relentless seasonal heat and sunlight.
Site #1 was a large, pull-through campsite, easy in/easy out. The roads were gravel but well maintained. Campsites were spaced out with lots of distance between each one. There was not a constant stream of people or vehicles going by. The only noise we could hear at all was some traffic noise from I-8. We quickly set up camp and ate lunch. Then we went outside, each with our new camera equipment, and experimented. That’s something we’d wanted to do for days! It was fun.
The girls like it here a lot! We’ve had the windows wide open, which we’ve all enjoyed. The temperatures are warmer and there’s not the constant stream of people. Here’s to fresh air and quiet relaxation!
