BOSQUE DEL APACHE#5.
Day 80 – It’s beginning to get colder here. The nights were low to mid-30’s, now upper 20’s. The days were upper 50’s to mid-60’s, now upper 40’s to mid 50’s. There’s almost always some wind blowing, but it hasn’t been with the high gusts we’d experienced in eastern New Mexico. Rumor has it that a winter storm may be coming in from the northwest over the weekend.
In the morning I worked on blog catch up and Rob helped Cathie with adding an electrical connector in her trailer. In the afternoon, we all trooped to the Refuge again. There wasn’t much sun, which can make the pictures not as good, but we were in luck as far as bird availability. Along with Hawks and Kestrals, Ravens and Ducks, etc., we saw three deer in the field and something we’d seen a few days ago for the first time ever – Javelina – but were unable to get any pictures of them before.
After we left the Refuge, we went back to the RV and Cathie took Petey to see some cows. He loves cows, and gets all quivery with excitement when he sees them. He was friends with a cow when he was younger.
In the early evening we went with Cathie to the city of Socorro, a bigger town than San Antonio, to get propane for our tanks and go out to dinner for some authentic Mexican food. (Pete stayed home and slept.) Socorro was a town with a very Mexican feel and a town square lit up with Christmas lights. Nice. Dinner was at a restaurant recommended by the owner of the RV Park, El Camino. It was a quirky, diner-like place. They were busy. The food was great, regular Mexican food, which is completely different than the Tex-Mex or Gourmet-style Mexican food we are used to. Servings were quite large and the price was amazingly cheap. We would not hesitate to eat there again.
