BOSQUE DEL APACHE #4.

Day 79 – This is what happens when we get behind with the blog. We sat down this morning to work on the pictures and text for the blog from two days ago and discovered we’d already posted today’s pictures from the Refuge – in yesterday’s blog, along with all of yesterday’s Refuge pictures. Oh well. When you get behind and don’t post daily, it gets confusing.

BOSQUE DEL APACHE #2 AND #3.

Day 78 – The best time to view the birds is usually around sunrise and around sunset. Since we had a LONG day yesterday, we went back to the wildlife refuge today after the sun rose, but we do hope to get up really early one morning and catch the “fly-out”, when the cranes, geese, and ducks that are leaving to go to the fields depart mostly all at once. It can be quite a spectacle.

TRAVEL DAY

From: Bottomless Lakes State Pk., Roswell, NM – Bitter Lake National Wildlife Refuge.

To: Chupadero Mountain View RV Pk., San Antonio, NM – Bosque del Apache NWR.

Day 77 – We are behind with our blog posts; we are fine, just slow, LOL. Today is Dec. 30 and we’re just getting to Monday’s post. Got busy – sorry!

Back to Monday, we got up early, to an alarm – a horrific way to start the day when you’re retired! We needed to get on the road as early as possible since our travels today were going to take us through mountain passes with predicted high wind gusts beginning mid-morning.

The Day After……

Day 76 – Do you remember when you were a child and the day after Christmas was always a letdown? Now as adults, there’s this buildup, this crazy running around trying to get everything done, then boom – it’s over. Well, in a different way for us, today is a letdown compared to yesterday’s wonderful wildlife watching. The wind is back, the dust is flying, and we’re inside catching up on things, preparing to leave here early tomorrow to get over the pass going west from Roswell. The wind will be worse tomorrow afternoon.

MERRY CHRISTMAS; HAPPY HOLIDAYS EVERYONE!

Day 75 – We had a good day today. We hope your day was good, too! We are writing today’s post a day late; we were busy all day yesterday, as you will see. The wind had died down and it was a very nice day, perfect for scenic driving at the wildlife refuge. Although it did cloud up a bit, that was part of the scenery. The high was 71 degrees.

A RELAXING DAY.

Day 73 – It was 35 degrees this morning and partly cloudy when we got up. We stayed around the campsite all day. We caught up on some things – it’s so easy to get behind – baked a loaf of bread & made egg salad, Rob got some parts ordered for upcoming RV work he wants to do, etc. We had an appointment here at the campsite to have the Honda’s windshield repaired. The crack was too long, so they replaced the windshield. The high today was 78 degrees with full sun and a breeze later in the day.

TRAVEL DAY

From: Oasis State Park, Portales, NM.

To: Bottomless Lakes State Park, Roswell, NM – Bitter Lake National Wildlife Refuge.

Day 72 – It was up to 35 degrees this morning, sunny and no wind. We had some errands to run before arriving at our next destination, so we left Oasis State Park earlier than we usually leave when traveling, a little after 9 a.m.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, CAROL! WE HOPE YOUR BIRTHDAY BRINGS YOU SNOW FOR THE HOLIDAYS!

TRAVEL DAY

From: Ute Lake State Park, Logan, NM

To: Oasis State Park, Portales, NM.

Day 71 – A little warmer this morning – 28 degrees, partly cloudy, and no wind. We’re heading south for an appointment in Roswell to get the Honda’s windshield repaired. But there are several other reasons for us to go south: it will be warmer at night, the area we’re headed may have less wind, and several of the best wildlife refuges lie in our path. Today’s drive will be fairly short and will take us to a one-night stopover near Portales, NM.

THINGS HAPPEN; PLANS CHANGE.

Day 70 – Again very cold, 22 degrees this morning, and when we checked the weather, we saw that we were facing about five days of strong winds beginning Wednesday. It looked like most of the upper half of New Mexico would be very windy, so we decided we should completely change the direction of our planned route around NM. Since tomorrow we’ll be heading south instead of the planned northwest, we’ll be doing some research today. We’re glad we chose to have this extra day here.
