THINGS HAPPEN; PLANS CHANGE.

Day 70 – Again very cold, 22 degrees this morning, and when we checked the weather, we saw that we were facing about five days of strong winds beginning Wednesday. It looked like most of the upper half of New Mexico would be very windy, so we decided we should completely change the direction of our planned route around NM. Since tomorrow we’ll be heading south instead of the planned northwest, we’ll be doing some research today. We’re glad we chose to have this extra day here.

Last night we saw many Sandhill Cranes flying overhead. Same thing this morning. Hopefully, they, too, are heading south. These very cold nights have been a drain on the propane we need to have for heating the RV. Today we took a drive to Tucumcari, the nearest decent-sized town, to refill the portable propane tank, and we stopped at Subway to pick up lunch. We saw more antelope in the fields.

Soon after we left the campground, we noticed a chip in the Honda windshield. Upon examining this, we found two more chips and then we noticed a seven-inch crack in the windshield. These problems were not there when we drove around the TX canyons on Saturday, so we’re pretty sure gravel must’ve hit the windshield yesterday during our drive to this campground.

After lunch, Rob called our auto insurance company. They set up an appointment for someone to come out and take a look on Thursday. We had to decide quickly where we’d be for this appointment – looks like Roswell, NM. (X-Files, anyone?) And, this was a surprise: they can actually replace a windshield on-site when they come out to take a look, if they find it to be necessary!

The Turkeys passed through the campsites again and this time we got pictures. Rob also made a friend with the wasp that was at his feet helping him take turkey pix. The high today was 67 degrees, sunny with almost no wind.

Before sunset we took a walk around the section of Ute Lake that’s near our campground. We saw a Great Blue Heron fishing, Canada Geese, Green-Winged Teal, a Hawk, Crows, and other Ducks. It was beautiful as the sun set.
